256 gb of ram

Hi guys! I was wondering if I can shove 256 gb of ram in a 8 slot mobo. What kind of processor do I need if I want to have 256 gigs of ddr4 ram? I want to configure it to use approx 192 gb as a high-speed memory that gets dumped into my hard drive. Thanks!

Which mobo?

You need at least win 8/10 pro 64bit for that

I think some x99 mobo should do. Not sure of skylake

I don't think there are 32gb slot ram. best is 16x8 but I could be wrong

Ok so do you want the RAM as storage?

One of the easiest reasons I can come up with is scrolling through 4K video in Adobe Premiere

I will say it again, are you sure you need it?

If you are, looks like X99 supports only up to 128GB, but that should suffice, honestly.

We have a NEW and GLORIOUSER-ER-ER PSU Tier List Now. (dammit @LukeSavenije stop coming up with new ones)

You can check out the old one that gave joy to so many across the land here

well, you would need a mobo that supports ECC memory, as there is little to none that isnt non-ECC memory, as well as you will need a 64-bit OS (windows pro level or higher)

as for the 192 gb being used, you will need to look into software/hardware that can be used to make a ram disk

as for price, amazons cheapest 4x 32gb kit(or 128gb) is roughly 630 USD so, you will need alot of cash on that front

Having a RAM disk that size (which is what I assume you mean) is the most pointless thing I've ever heard of. Get a slow SSD and call it a day. Trust me, I've done both, and one of the two is practical.

Have you heard of titan x with minecraft? That's even more pointless

Yes, that I can use it as high speed mem while my pc is on. I know everything erases if it powers off, so I will probs have multiple terabytes of hdd.

Budget does not matter. I was planning to use a xeon processor and a random 8-slot mobo that supports 256 gb of ram. I saw linus's vid about configing your ram as memory, so I will follow his instructions.

some sort of  serve board, and some sort of zeon that'll support more than 128gb

Yea I think I might have to use a server board

I would just do 128GB then :P

You can still fit Fallout 4 in that much RAM.

Don't do this get a ssd.

Your OS will cache your files and hdd in ram already.

The ram you are going to find in that capacity is going to be registered ecc ram, which won't work on normal desktop motherboards, so you can't really share it unless your family all have xeons, and workstation/server boards.

Also there isn't a choice to use windows 10 pro or not, windows 10 home only has support for up to 128gb of ram.
