Any Australians Here on the NBN?

QFA350

Hello everybody!

I recently found out that I will be moving to Wagga Wagga from Sydney and I was given the job to find decent internet plans for a cheap price. One of the plans that I found was $80/month for a landline telephone and unlimited internet data on the NBN (National Broadband Network). Investigating more, I found that the speed was NBN Basic which is about 1.2MB/s Down and 500KB/s up. Would I see any benefits from going with the NBN plan such as more consistent speeds and lower ping or should I just pay the same price for cable with 3MB/s down and 1MB/s up?

Thanks!

That's odd, all the time I hear about people saying Australia's pricing is much higher than the U.S. Yet your ISP choices are better than mine, $70.00 a month for 1.5Mbps down, 750Kbps up with no phone & limited to 150GB data a month.

Oh Shit YEAH.   And that is not a good price - actually is not a bad price, but shit capacity for the price.

Dont get "landline phone"... old tech - and it uses two connections on the NTU... Just get an Internet Fibre service with voip telephony over data.

For example:  https://www.iinet.net.au/internet-products/broadband/nbn/

Unlimited data At 25Mb/s /5Mb/s  all Australian calls included via "NetPhone" at AU$80/m

Currently we are paying $80 for a landline phone and unlimited at 1.2MB/s down but all we ever get is around 250-800KB/s down on speedtest.

Sorry... i mis-read... thought you were moving TO Sydney, not from Sydney.

NBN Wireless coverage maybe (try the address).   Otherwise ADSL might be the best you can do.

Yeah kinda what I was thinking. ADSL2+ or Cable? Both are for the same price with cable being at 3MB/s and ADSL2+ being 1.2. can you give me a brief rundown on the pros and cons of both?

Thanks!

For a start can we make it a bit clearer about what you're actually talking about here? Because I'm pretty damn sure that Wagga Wagga doesn't have a "cable" service, or what people would normally call HFC. Looking at a map there are three services that NBNCo are rolling out in that area. Some of the new estates are getting FTTH, full fibre, aka GPON. Most of the existing areas inside the town are getting FTTN aka VDSL. Then surrounding areas are on fixed wireless aka LTE aka 4G.

On all these services? When they say 12Mbps they mean 12Mbps. When they say 25Mbps they mean 25Mbps. It's when you get beyond that it gets a bit tricky. I'm pretty sure that currently they don't offer 50Mbps on wireless or satellite plans and even if they did they couldn't guarantee it. On FTTN? You'll probably get 50Mbps but if you can't I'm pretty sure they won't offer it as an option. If you have FTTH? If this is one of the new estates? You can get 50Mbps, you can get 100Mbps. It'll run at that speed.

The 24Mbps you're comparing it to? That's not "24Mbps" in the same sense. That's ADSL2+, you might get 24Mbps if you're super lucky. More likely you'll be sitting at around 10Mbps or so. You might get worse than even that. But if you can get the full 24Mbps? It might be better value than the basic NBN plan. Though if you can get that on ADSL you can get better speeds on the NBN.

I may not like how the NBN has ended up but I'll tell you this. If the second-rate FTTN version of the NBN rolled down my street? I'd sign up in an instant.

ADSL2+ currently I wont see NBN for at least 3 years. (and it will be the FTTN :( )

look there, outside the 'c'bd you get fixed wireless, in town there doesn't look to be nbn yet. but when it's done it'll be the shitty fttn

EDIT: ignore me, i didn't scroll down to see this has already been posted.

Not at all, avoid it if you can. (Unless dial up, 3g or sat are the only other choices)

Ok thanks. We are leaning towards the cable side with the 3MB/s down.

If you can get cable then get it but I'm not convinced you can. From what I can tell most of Wagga Wagga is on ADSL only with an upgrade plan to move to VDSL on the NBN. The areas that aren't are either FTTH because they're new estates or LTE because they're out of town. If it's an option go with the NBN. If it's not? .... well you don't have an option.

I wouldn't know there's an nbn co van been installing a node in my street for about 8months now, with the blokes sneaking a piss in my neighbour's yard thinking no one can see them. Then they stand around looking at a hole full of fiber optics and scratching their arses for the rest of the day... I might be a little salty at this point, my net has been cut off a couple of times a week for about a year, by workmen using a shovel instead of wire cutters.

Also I get a little better than those speeds on adsl2 for $60 a month, without a landline (we all use mobile phones anyway).

Silent build - You know your pc is too loud when the deaf complain. Windows 98 gaming build, smells like beige
