Probably shouldn't mess with school equipment because you could get in huge trouble.  Plus Macbooks are trash for gaming.

Hey

So, i just got a new macbook air from my school but it is locked down, I don't have admin rights, so i cant instal stuff like steam.

I have 0 experience with macs.

Does anyone know how to get admin rights or get past them?

Thanks.

did you/your parents pay for the laptop? if so you can do stuff on your laptop like this, but if you/your parents didn't pay for the laptop you probably shouldn't try to do this kind of stuff

(i also have a macbook air via school but my parents paid for it)

press cmd + s when booting. You should see white text on a black screen.

You can then make a new admin accound with these commands(it will run the initial setup again)

/sbin/mount -uw /

/sbin/mount -uw /

You should definitely try this. And even if you do break something, it's a school laptop, you can bring it to your school's tech support and they'll fix it. Anything you do can be rolled back and re imaged in a very short span of time :)

you're forgetting the fact that the sysadmin will ask what he did and if he got the laptop for free it's probably in the Terms Of Service that you can't do this kind of stuff

But how would the sysadmin know?

Besides this is becoming a discussion of ethics. Who are we to say he is wrong to unlock his mac?

if you just press command+r you can reinstall the operating system from there however if it is schools i don't recommend doing it unless they gave it to you on a permanent / semi-permanent basis or they don't really care what you do it it.

If you want a more in depth tutorial i would follow the instructions on apples website.

to answer your question: you said if you break something, and if you break something to the point where the sysadmin has to fix it, he or she will probably know that you broke it :P

and:

if they locked OP's computer they probably had reasoning behind it :)

If his macbook have been singed in via the admins apple id he will know if the system has been reinstalled as it will be offline permanently from his find my mac in his apple ID in which case he can either remotely lock the macbook from his end when ever the mac connects to the internet. Making it a paper weight until he gives it back / the admin unlocks it. Its an anti thief system built into the macs bios once it has been locked it will no longer boot unless it has the password.

"break something" in software != broken forever.

Besides, what's the worst thing that can happen in the process of making himself admin?

does this reinstall the OS? I don't want to have to get some installation media.

to everyone saying its a bad idea since its not my property, i will have this laptop till the end of school, so when its time to return it, they can easily set it back up.

i might get in trouble but I honestly don't care.

yeah, but be sure to check in settings > sharing if remote desktop is enabled :P

our sysadmin enables it by default and uses his admin account to see what you're doing

I single-handedly helped pretty much everyone in my school disable this xD

you can actually play lol at constant 60FPS on med settings.

@hemmigumm open the kernel and try to install it that way, should work.

May the light have your back and your ISO low.

it would actually be pretty easy to do this though. you just need to know someone who has an iCloud account and a Mac. Get them to download El Capitan from the App Store and then save it to a USB stick for you (using terminal or disk maker x, very easy to do).

Will the school ever check the laptop while you have it to make sure it's as it should be? If not, reinstall the OS!
