Should I get an i5 or and i7

Pizzalord
Go to solution Solved by smokefest,

I5 for gaming is enough. I7 will bring an extra 5% frames maybe. Some games i7 will not benefits at all.

That said, for a budget pc, i5 with a better gpu is better than i7 with a less good gpu..

If you are rich, then get the i7 , if ur on a budget, get i5 for sure.

I7 is just an extra buck spender. its better. but in term of $ for performance, i5 is the shit

Hey guys,

I'm planning on building a building my first pc and my final obstacle is determining whether I should get an i5 or an i7. The specific models I'm interested in are the i5 6500 and the i7 6700; and I tried reading the the spec sheets on intel but I don't understand everything that they're saying. I plan on using the computer for some gaming and normal-level video editing - so nothing special. But after consulting my friends, they told me to get the i7 because it will last me longer and that I will later come to appreciate the features that the i5 doesn't have. However, the price difference between an i5 and an i7 is pretty big here where i'm from; so if someone could help tell me whether the extra cash i'll be putting in will be worth it or not, I'll really appreciate it.

Thank you!

I think your friends only said the i7 because it's just a "i7".

You really only need an i7 unless you are rendering frequently, otherwise the i5 will do the job perfectly whilst saving you a few bucks!

Yeah, I'm getting a 1060 either way. Thanks for the opinion!

i5 will be a better choice, since what you're gonna do with your computer is not CPU-concentrated(I mean stressing CPU hard) task.

Depends on what you need, For gaming it's not necessary. But for Content creators, You're better of with the 6700. But still, Try to get the 6600k for less money, Slightly more than the 6500 and you can overclock it to about an i7 6700 non overclocked.

I'm definitely not an enthusiast content creator, I mostly do these projects for my school. Thanks for letting me now about the overclocing too. I think i'm quite confident about getting the i5 now.

The difference will be marginal especially if you over clock the CPU. Many people go the i5 route for a cheaper CPU, but can game the same as an i7.

Core i7 3770K @ 4.1Ghz (stock voltages) H100i, 32gig of RAM (9-9-9-24), 500gig Samsung EVO 850, 6 Monitors. GTX980ti, R9 380

Since you are going for a 1060, the i5 will be enough. But if you want a 1070/1080/980Ti/Titan X/Fury X - you should really consider an i7 or Xeon

Get the i5 6600k, It's about £40 More expensive than the 6500. Even if you're not planning to overclock, You'll still get a higher clock speed out of the Box. better performance and it's just overall better. If so, Get a Z170 Motherboard to pair with that i5 6600k, Then you can overclock it.

*Note that the Intel Core i5 6600k Doesn't come with a Intel Stock cooler, You you'll need to get an aftermarket cooler for it, Such as the Cooler master Hyper 212 is a great choice

I was originally planning to get a 6600k but i changed my mind to save the £40 xD. But i've made adjustments according to my budget since then so I think I can get a 6600k and a fan to go along with it too. Thanks

i5-6600K if you're overclocking (requires Z170 motherboard), 6600 if you're not. With some light OC:ing you can easily reach stock-i7-6700K-speed performance in games.

yeah, i don't game nearly as often enough to make the 1070 or anything higher worth the money. So i'm sticking with the options i have now

Do you plan on gaming on this computer? What is your primary focus?

Sorry, just re-read your OP.

i7 would be better for video editing

Eeeh, not really correct anymore. Modern games use over 16 cores/threads and the i7 is around 20-30% better in games

Show me proofs, ive seen all the videos on youtube.

Some games do get a lil edge with i7 , not many, and the edge is small as fuck, not worth the money.

If you r rich, then get it. if on a budget, not worth the i7 at all.

I did say i7 gets you an extra 5% fps.

Look at Digital Foundry and also look at up the videos regarding i5s bottlenecking 1070s

I7 is better, just not enouff for the extra 150$.

Better go for a better gpu, put that 150 in a gpu.

IF you have all the money possible on earth and u give no fuck then go for i7 for sure.

Topic was about gettin best cpu for bucks, wich is not the i7 for sure.

There is no point buying a 1070 or other high end GPU if your shitty i5 is going to bottleneck it.
