How do I disable Nvidia card in laptop?

So I am getting a laptop with a GTX 1060 to replace my desktop. Problem is that i want to have extra battery life from the laptop when I am at school or out typing papers. SO, my question is, is there a way to disable the Nvidia card and just use the iGPU from the I7? Please help. Thanks

 

Just for information, laptops choices is between the Razer Blade (GTX1060) and the Asus GL502VM

You should be able to do it by going to Nvidia Control Panel > 3D Settings > Manage 3D Settings > Preferred Graphics Processor.  By default it's probably set to auto-select, but you can force it to integrated graphics or dedicated graphics there.

most gaming laptops (like mine) down clock the GPU when on battery to something abysmal like 200Mhz, which doesn't take very much power.

i know of no automatic way to do this, sorry

Just for information, laptops choices is between the Razer Blade (GTX1060) and the Asus GL502VM

That laptop has no MUX switch so it's impossible. Furthermore, it overheats as the 1060 is too hot for that design. Get the GL502VT 970M version if you want that laptop with good battery life and temps.

Most laptops disable it entirely via Optimus or Enduro

It's not possible - the dGPU is directly linked to the display on that model - it would not boot if he were to do that.

It doesn't - it has G-sync.

That's called a MUX Switch and it's an external button which is not present on that laptop.

I stand corrected.  To be fair, not very well versed in the world of gaming laptops, have never actually heard of this being a thing. Although makes sense if it has G-sync I guess.

Normally - the dGPU passes the calculations through the iGPU which displays then. When G-sync is enabled - it has to be directly linked to the display. Hence why you need a MUX switch to change between the 2 modes.

Only laptops currently in the market with GSync and "Optimus" are from Clevo because they're the only ones that bothered with the additional cost of putting a MUX switch in.

Hm so since it won't work with G-sync than Asus is out of the question. How well does optimus even work? or does it  even do anything at all.

Optimus and Enduro (AMD's solution) both worth very well. The 1060 GL502VM gets 3 hours of battery. My personal 970M GL502VT gets 6 hours of battery life.
