alot of the higher settings is the post processing of the small details, like hair effects, view distance, grass, water, slightly lower texture resolution etc... it really can be difficult to tell in some games and more in others when you turn the settings down and tweak them up to crank the FPS.

Often the difference between the highest settings is minimal. It's buying the most expensive GPU over the one below that, it makes less difference than the lowest end two GPU's.

try to run it on a native 1080p display at 1080p and try. See if there's AA going on or something

In some games like GTA V, you can notice some difference if you turn on the advanced settings, shadows render even further away, but if you turn that setting off, shadow only render when you are close... Although shadow still render when you are relatively close to them.

Yeah, it's more or less the same, some shadows settings (different from the one I've mentioned above) change A LOT, like, night and day for me (Medium vs high). Everything else (most of it) is just a 'because I can' thing.

In many games the visual difference between high/very high or ultra (everything maxed) is barely noticeable unless you know what to look for.

It's also a mentality thing. Some people just feel better knowing they can turn everything to the max and still play at over 60fps.

Its just game dependent. Sometimes all the extra settings get you are refinements on existing effects like softer shadows and maybe a bit better AA in motion. Othertimes its a completely different lighting system or vastly better antialiasing. It varies so much by game that its not something you can talk about generally.

There's a pretty big disparity between a lot of the settings. You can argue if they are worth the fps investment, but not that the difference isn't there. But like I said, in a fast paced shooter you won't see them as fast paced shooters are not meant to be played in a way that has you noticing textures or clutter.

If anyone asks you never saw me.
