Is there a rx 460 that does not require pcie power?

One of my friends currently has an amd r5 230 which is basically trash, his power supply does not have any support for graphics cards that require external pcie power, are there any rx 460s that get all of there power from the pcie slot just like the 750 ti? If there is not do you guys think its still worth it to buy a 750 ti for $100? His max budget is around $150 and im trying to help him upgrade his potato.

I would look into the 950 75W or 750 Ti. I don't know if Nvidia has announced a new low wattage card.

I would get a decent psu first.

If it doesn't even have a PEG connector it's probably trash and a big safety risk.

 

There is no point in having a good gpu when you run the risk of burning your house down...

That's not a joke btw, a cheap psu can catch fire and burn everything down. 

 

It's like a cheapo chinese phone charger blowing up, only much bigger.

750 Ti for 100$ is travesty when 150$ gets you a lot more performance. The reference 460 was 75W without any external connectors IIRC.

Go with the AMD then.

 

Hopefully it doesnt' take 85W out of the PCIe slot.

modern boards should be able to handle about 90W from the slot so who cares

Put can the PSU supply enough power? As it doesn't have any PCIe connectors (like all of my PSU from pre 2005)

Sigh. Again. Motherboard manufactures have said that it's not safe. Especially on lower end boards where this would be used.

Actually, Toms themselves said it's perfectly safe for any boarrd made in recent years as they use 5 +12V pegs, which is 1 more than PCIe spec (which is 4 +12V pegs) so if 4 of them supply 75W then 5 would supply 85=ish W perfectly fine.

I'd go with the motherboard manufacturers with what is and isn't safe. And your not considering that the PSU without PCIe connectors are either very old (probably 10 years+ old) or dirt cheap.

I agree. Sounds like the system, in general, is the bare minimum to run, so I wouldn't want to risk it if it draws over-spec.

 

An r5 230 and unbranded PSU without GPU power connectors doesn't sound modern to me. You could get an EVGA 430w for $30 US (20.98 on NewEgg with a MIR, counting shipping) and then a $120 GPU ($130 after the MIR on the PSU), which is probably a much better deal. 

 

$130 will get you an R9 370/ GTX 950, on PCPartPicker. Probably a 380/960 if you're willing to go used.
