Can you disable "Cortana" after Windows 10 anniversary update?

yeah I get you now news, microsoft wifi, candy crush that sort of things that you can remove but really shouldn't even be there. I mean why would I need microsoft wifi for finding wifi networks on a desktop? not like I move it all that much.

Why is it that in past versions of windows I could have control over programs and such, but now in windows 10 comes out I can't? This is something I am very much against.

These apps are not installed. They install when you click on them. You just need to right-click and unpin them. The rest can be uninstalled, without leaving any trace, as they are fully sandboxed as they are Universal Apps... so that is a good thing about them.

 

Windows 10 does not include McAfee, you installed that, or your OEM.
Windows 10 includes (since Windows 8), Windows Defender (aka: Microsoft Security Essential back in Windows 7 days).

I have absolutely no idea how it got there, my win7 key has never installed McAfee on Windows 7 nor would I ever choose to install it myself.

All I can think is that you have some software that comes with it, it partially installed it, despite you saying no, and when you upgraded to Windows 10, it "finished" this install... just a guess. That you installed Flash or something and you didn't uncheck that you didn't want McAfee. Many setups have fun in hiding that check box, or plays with you, to make it confusing. I wont' be surprised if one days we have setup "Do you not want to not have McAfee not uninstalled on your system?" with the smallest text and checkbox that is impossible to hit. And to get that check box, you need to hit like "About" button on the setup screen, or some crap.

I always doublecheck if a program wants to install another program. I honestly have no clue, but it doesn't really matter anyways since I will not be "upgrading" to Win10 before I buy a new computer, but that is not needed atm, only thing I'm looking into upgrading is my GTX 780Ti. And maybe I will install Linux on it instead since just from using Windows 10 on my laptop and on friends computers etc. I got tired of it.

You can literally just rename the important bloatware and windows can't find it so it doesn't run. Just rename Cortana and she is turned off.

Not really. Directx9 games can be run pretty well within Wine, the major roadblock for Linux currently is Directx11 and 12. If games decide that limiting their audience to only Windows 10 owners is too much and want Windows 7 users (ie most people) to be able to access their games then the games will run inherently on Linux (or at least be very easily portable) pretty much automatically.

 

Remember as well why I haven't bothered to even mention Directx10? Because nothing fucking used it. Why? It was Windows Vista exclusive, and people made it abundantly clear what they thought of that. OS exclusivity is how you kill an API.

 

Look if we can get to a point where people are running Windows because they choose to because it's good, and not because they have to because Microsoft have a monopoly then I don't see what there is to complain about. There are things that Windows 10 does well. Scaling, for instance. I don't know of a desktop environment where I could have three monitors, all different sizes, a mix of resolutions all with completely different scaling settings and have the whole thing not fall apart. Windows 10 manages this surprisingly perfectly. Windows needs more of this, and less "we are going to data mine you to oblivion because lmfao where are you going to go, Apple!?"

I know imagine someone trying to buy a macbook on a windows 10 PC, but Windows 10 is fighting back, and it ends with the person JUST completing the transaction and Cortana suddenly says, "Why do you have to do this to me?", then the guy throws it out while it's making some sort of whiney noise.
