Everyones opinions on 4K vs Ultrawide for gaming?

MVPernula

Title.

Which one is do you prefer? Would you get a 4K display or an ultrawide(curved?) for gaming/productivity?
I don't know at all, I'm in between that choice atm. I'm on a GTX1080.

I haven't tried 4k but i image it to be like 1080p just sharper.

UWQHD however is EPIC.

10/10 would buy again.

Wrong, once a 120/144hz 3440x1440p monitor comes out, that would be better ;)

Looking at my signature are we now? Well too bad there's nothing here...

Neither as I prefer 2 16:9 monitors for general use ;) (but never properly gamed on ultrawide before so...I don't know but productivity point of view, always 2 separate monitors, easier plagiarism...) Just kidding, haven't plagiarised since primary school.

Yeah it is great for productivity but on a large display close up it involves a lot of head turning, and I HATE black bars on games that dont support ultra wide, plus I dont think it adds much to the experience when a 16:9 27" is really good at filling your vision and being immersive

i think 34" 4k is a nice experience too, but again it could be considered too large, so i think 1440p is the sweet spot for that size, plus its easier to run

yeah 1440p, 144hz, Gsync IPS, i mean, that is every box being ticked right there for me!!

ultrawide and 4k are nice, but are not worth the trade offs IMO

Ermmmm, my future (when I get back to Edinburgh from Tokyo in like 2 weeks) monitor setup will obviously be the best...my trusty 3-4 year old 120hz 1080 24 inch monitor as primary and a new 1440p ips 25 inch to replace my old 1050p 22 inch secondary :)

4K makes everything so small ... I just don't like it.

But if you want it to be 1440p, 144 - 165Hz + G-sync + IPS ... you are looking at crazy price sadly.

That's why I'm using budget 1440p 60fps.

I want that g-sync, but can't afford one.

So OP, if you can afford one, go for it. Best gaming experience you can imagine.

yeah and then you have to use 150% scaling, meaning its basically1440p anyway :D maybe a tiny bit sharper but 1440p is damn sharp

Yeah I have a 1440p 60hz display and I am very happy

UWA helps but it depends on the game. I went for it specifically for Elite: Dangerous. I think 4k would be ok too, but only at bigger screen sizes.

For productivity I don't so like UWA so much. It is kinda like having two square-ish monitors side by side which in itself isn't that bad. There is some silly windows behaviour which tends to make some things pop up in top left corner, or you get silly wide windows appear. So in that sense, I think a 2 or 3 monitor setup would be better as it helps to tie windows to a particular monitor. Multi-monitor could get better looking forward if games start using nvidia SMP. And you have a 10 series nvidia card.

Main system: i9-7980XE, Asus X299 TUF mark 2, Noctua D15, Corsair Vengeance Pro 3200 3x 16GB 2R, RTX 3070, NZXT E850, GameMax Abyss, Samsung 980 Pro 2TB, Acer Predator XB241YU 24" 1440p 144Hz G-Sync + HP LP2475w 24" 1200p 60Hz wide gamut
Gaming laptop: Lenovo Legion 5, 5800H, RTX 3070, Kingston DDR4 3200C22 2x16GB 2Rx8, Kingston Fury Renegade 1TB + Crucial P1 1TB SSD, 165 Hz IPS 1080p G-Sync Compatible

Went 3440x1440 34" Curved Ultrawide and never looked back.

Will not touch multi monitor setups ever again.
