It's not used as much as +12V for sure, but it's not entirely meaningless... Especially if your USB ports run off of the 5V rail you can push a good few Amps through it...

The PM responsible for that wanted a cheap Gold PSU.  It's based off of CX-M, but Gold.  Since it didn't have Japanese capacitors and was rated at 40°C and only a 10ms hold up time, he wasn't allowed to call it TX-M.

So it's better than the CX-M but worse than the TX-M/RMx/i?

Fair but I'd still take a slightly out-of-spec on the 5V but otherwise great performing (and 80+ Platinum to boot) PSU over something like a NEX

Yeah, but you can get the NEX to go out of spec pretty easily too

Correct.

 

TX-M has always been rated at 50°C and met Intel's 16ms hold up time requirement.

Yeah but it's an NEX, the G+ is excellent in every other respect and much cheaper than the similarly performing (and louder) G2

TX-M came out in 2011.  CS-M was launched in 2013.

 

TX-M Bronze was discontinued for a while when RM first came out.  Then CS-M came out to fill a gap between CX-M and RM.  TX-M came back to replace CS-M.

I personally was referring to the current variation of TXm released in 2017, though yes, the old TX did exist before the CS and was still (probably) better...

Im currently choosing between a Corsair TX650M Gold semi-modular and Seasonic's FOCUS 650+ Gold fully modular. Would you recommend either of those two (but which one) or would you recommend a different one or a lower watt PSU.

 

Planned build is:

• Ryzen 2600
• B350/B450
• RX580 Strix
• Corsair LPX 8GB 2400
• 1 SSD/1 HD
• 5 case fans

I'd suggest a better quality lower wattage PSU - Bitfenix Whsiper 450M/BeQUiet Straight Power 11 450w is good. If you need to save money the Bitfenix Formula 450w also works. If you can't get those brands the Corsair RM550x is also good.

Bitfenix is not available in my country, an available BeQuiet is Straight Power 10 500w and noticed that the RM550x is a bit pricy tho.  welp... need to adjust the budget again

What about a BeQuiet Pure Power 10 400/500w, otherwise the Seasonic is *fine*, just get a lower wattage version.

Owrighty then, all set One last thing, refering to my planned build, care to explain why should I get (let's say) a 500-550w PSU rather than a 600-650w PSU. Im just curious tho.

Te lower wattage PSU is quieter and will be more efficient (if only ever so slightly) during idle time or low load situations. Also cheaper.
