Just going by the images, you wouldn't know there was any changes or not. At first, I thought it may be a modified CWT GPM platform (VS is based off of this) so it would be supported at 100-240V instead of 200-240V, which in turned will have more robust components in the primary to handle the higher currents and maintain that 40C rating.

But looking at the load distribution chart and seeing that the VS500 has a higher minor rail rating than the VS550, that probably isn't the case. Actually, Meerkat may actually be right in saying mentioning the HEC build EVGA W1, as the VS500 and 500W1 has the same load distribution.

You raise interesting points.

In that case, it's probably marginally better than the old ones. Corsair still puts a 3-year warranty in there though, so maybe they have better caps.

Edit: EVGA also has a 3-year warranty on it. Signs point to it being the same platform and differences will be small.

Any info on Segotep?

They seem to make some pretty high end units at least on the efficiency side (they manufacture for themselves), but are they a Seasonic or a Raidmax

Looking at their market prices, their 80+ Gold 500W unit is 25% cheaper than a S12II 520W, and it's called SG-600G even though it's only rated for 500W. Both these point to a bad OEM.

CWT GPA. That's the same stock photo that is used for the older VS as well. http://www.ebw.gr/el/product/1304732/Corsair-VS650-Power-supply-internal

Here's a review of the VS450 which shows a different internal : http://www.hardwareinsights.com/wp/corsair-vs450-review/

So yeah. The images that is provided on the site isn't an accurate representation of the actual product. It's just reused images.

Time to put on the EVGA BQ?

http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story&reid=490

Decent unit; voltage regulation leaves something to be desired, ripple suppression is nothing to be amazed at and it uses Teapo capacitors.

I'm thinking Tier 3 or 4.

We're talking about it, I hope the 650W is at least as good since this is a value line of PSUs. For me it just doesn't make sense to recommend these unless they're really cheap, because anyone that'll load their PSUs up to 650W+ is going to have the money for a G2 or RMx. Perhaps I will recommend these to people who want to buy  used, power hungry GPUs like 290s and the like.

T4 PSUs aren't bad, they're just intensely meh. They'll do their job, but you may find it hard to push overclocks on it and it decidedly won't last as long as a T3 or higher PSU.

@STRMfrmXMN Got any dirt on this?

It's a hard one. I need someone to identify OEM just out of this pic and the name (Energy Optimus Mach III). Screams gutless wonder, but I'd rather be sure.

Edit: Pretty sure it's a gutless wonder. No 80+, no PFC, marketed as 500W but rated for 435W, yeah this is a bomb.

I wish I could help at all times but I'm ludicrously busy all the time doing work, school, sleep and somehow eating (and often staying up so late doing schoolwork that I end up getting hungry again) that I just can't address all concerns. Thanks for understandings guys as I type this on my phone which always seems to have autocorrect problems on this forum

It took me some time to find out that "Powerman" is an inwin brand and the OEM of powerman for that particular PSU was inwin. No name brands are not fun researching on. I through out half a dozen no name PSUs because it was just to hard finding the OEM and I wasn't going to use them or sell them without knowing the OEM.
