How is Comcast 2 gigabit possible?

So recently Comcast has started offering a 2 gigabit internet speed in my area. Yes, 2000 megabit Internet. Unfortunately it costs $300/month and has a $1000 installation fee. But it got me thinking, how is this possible? As far as i know there is no fiber in my area. So is it possible for coaxial cable to move 2 gigabit speeds? And why is the installation fee so high?

 

also it has a terabyte data cap whereas my current plan has no cap.

They don't use the same type of cabling that you have in your house. Keep in mind, they don't have a dedicated line running from the hub to each and every house -- they have dedicated lines running to large areas and then fork off of those main lines. And the installation fee is high because they need to install hardware in order to utilize the full speeds (not $1000 worth, but they overcharge...nothing new there).

They physically will have to run a fiber connection into your home to allow for that which would make sense with the higher installation fee.

Sounds pretty good to me. I pay $100 for 10Mb/s and have a 400GB data cap and to install fiber, which I am hooked up to costs $30,000 and it would be $500 a month. Good ole Century Link

Comcast is experimenting with rolling out data caps for all plans and things. New plans will get them immediately. The way mine work (atleast through Comcast in my locale) is that above 300GB/month, we get extra charges on our bill, our bandwidth has never been throttled.

Oh and they throttle just about every website I use. I talked to them on the phone and they said it is in the agreement when you sign up that they can "manage traffic" to assure maximum speeds for other users. FCC did nothing except raise rates of ISPs. I think I am going to get myself a VPN.

It's like google fiber, but instead of using gigabit fiber, all defices have to have 10 gigabit adapters in them. I personally think it's a completely retarded thing, as if you are going to offer service over 1gbps(which is completely unnecessary), you might as well just offer full 10gb connections. The installation fee is so high because unless you know your way around 10gb network gear, you are going to have to use their gear. You can find how much exactly all the stuff costs by just looking it up on google.

You actually don't need 10Gbit connections, you can do 2.5Gb or even 5Gb on a copper/fiber line.

I can't think why anyone would need this honestly... i mean yeah it's available in my area too but with the cost of a switch that is > 1 gig it makes it very meh then you are also bottlenecked by your write speeds for hard drives.

Well, write speeds on consumer NVME SSDs are up to, what, like 2GB/s (16gbps)? So there are definitely drives to leverage 10gbps speeds, and if you're uploading a lot of videos or if you plan on doing some heavy-duty hosting then it could be worthwhile.

That is true but the average person can't afford a lot of space on NVME :P most people use spinning drives for mass storage.
