Best GPU for 144HZ 1080p gaming?

Seireitou

Hello guys, so I've been watching like a hawk with the current pricing of last gen GPU's falling like hot pockets (Don't ask) this would be the perfect time to buy a GPU. So I'm curious what would be the perfect 1080p 144hz GPU for around $400 bucks? I know everybody is on the latest and greatest but with the 980ti so freaking close to the 1070 price and me hearing about how a Good model can be Oc'd to 1080 performance for almost the same price as a 1070, I don't see the point of buying a 1070 atm. I currently have a 650w PSU which I think is enough? Tell me if its not and I'll be getting a 1080p 144hz monitor (AFTER) I pick up the GPU. So for that price point what should I get? Know this, its very possible that I'd go to a 1440p 144hz monitor in the future but I'd keep my 1080p for quite sometime. I don't upgrade much once I have a good set up. Maybe every 2-3 years.

So I'd like all tips or suggestions, just leave them here. :)

I highly doubt a 980 Ti can be OC'd to match a 1080. Either way, if your budget for a GPU is $400 then get a GTX 1070. EVGA's cheapest 1070 is $20 over your budget but it's worth it.

Why a 1070 over 980ti?

Why a 1070 over 980ti?

1. They are cheaper

2. Better ACX design for cooling (by EVGA)

3. Faster memory

4. 2GB more memory

5. Less power draw

980ti is mostly head to head with 1070 and both can max out games with around 120FPS on 1080p.

AMD doesnt hvaae a card for 144Hz monitors and Crosfire might not always work.

So u these two are your only options.

MSI has almost MSRP 1070 card called ARMOR so have a look at that.

I have my eyes on MSI Gaming or EVGA SC for now, but im getting mine in September so things can change pricewise :P

The cheapest 1070 I'm seeing on newegg is by EVGA at $419.99 The armor is 10 extra bucks.

I guess when I last checked Armor was on discount or something. But that was here in UK.
Now each site is asking different price haha. Some are same price ARMOR and SC on others theres like £40 difference lol.

Bad times for GPU market atm :(

Anyway, any custom fan design is better than blower design from Nvidia. EVGA SC is reference PCB with custom coolin so thats why it is so cheap. I am surprised its EVGA who have cheap card, I always viewed them as the more premium option.

In case u want cheaper 1070 u have to wait for Palit, Gainward or Zotac but these cards are not supposed to OC as well as other brands.

I personally might not ever OC my card once I get it, im used to my GTX 760, cant imagine what its like to max out games and be well above 100FPS :D I will be amazed for months.

I'd rather get EVGA as at least I know I can OC well and have a quality card.

I heard a lot good about EVGA especially their CS.

About the monitor u plan on getting. I dont know your budget but I can recommend Benq XL2430T. I did my research and the main difference between it and its little cheaper brother XL2411Z is better colour reproduction. If u are getting a non G-sync monitor.

Yeah non G-sync. Those things are expensive af. I'd like to get a 114HZ monitor below 250 if possible...but I haven't checked on the prices in awhile. I wont be buying till Black Friday so the prices will be a bit different anyway.

Oh plenty of time, absolutely different. I think it will go down a little and some might be on sale at that time.

My 980ti crushes every game I own at 1440, 99% of my games run over 80fps.

Give GSYNC some thought though. Yeah it's expensive but even at the stupid prices they ask it's worth it. No way I could go back now.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

What's the cheapest G-sync 144hz 1080p monitor? Besides do I really need G-sync if I'm constantly above 100 FPS on 1080p? o..0 Unless it does something extra that I don't know.

GSYNC has a larger impact the higher the fps. Anything over 100fps blows your mind.

I know there are a few 1080p GSYNC monitors but haven't checked pricing in awhile. Wait for sales, saved 300 bucks on mine that way.

A 980Ti can be OC'ed to match a 1080FE, because the FE will trottle and downclock itself to keep cold temps. An aftermarket version of 1080 will beat a 980Ti by 20-25%.

G-sync are overhyped, and the most overpriced bullshit i have seen. Yes its nice to have, but not at the cost of the monitors that have it. The cheapest gsync monitor that actually gives you an ok image aswell, is the Dell s2716dg, which is just as good as rog swift pg278Q and the 279Q. But it costs so damn much.

If you maintain 100fps+++ you wont notice g-sync, and the BenQ xl2411Z has just as good(if not better) image quality than all the gaming monitors on the market today. And yes, i have tried them all!

Buy the BenQ xl2411Z if you dont have a 144hz monitor already. 1080P on a 24inch looks almost identical to 1440P on a 27inch. But it taxes almost double horsepower of the gpu. In my opinion, 24inch 1080P gives stunning graphics, and takes very much less gpu power, and until 4K gaming becomes more standard, 1080P is still the way to go. That also means you dont have to buy expensive graphics cards often to maintain 144fps on your monitor.

I would buy 1070 or 1080. I bought 1080, but 1070 gives good value. Stick with 1080P for some more years, and buy a 1070/1080 now. The 1070 can be overclocked and beat the 980Ti, as long as you stay away from the FE editions. It is newer, has more Vram and less energy consumption. Buying the 980Ti for nearly the same price as 1070 is pure nonsense.

Vanilla 144hz is still the way to go, and a 1070/1080 is the choice if you want stunning graphics in 1080P.

And, the failrate on the g-sync modules are still HUGE. I have gotten artifacts while starting up games on several of them, and a quick internet search reveals that its pretty common. G-sync is at a beta stage still. My recommendation is to stay away from it for now. Maybe in a few years you can buy it.

Aye thanks for the great insight man, It makes a ton of sense, if you wouldn't mind telling me. How much does a BenQxl2411z cost anyway?? Once I get a 1070 and this monitor I wont be upgrading much of anything for a very long time. I already have an I7 4790k. So I'll probably get one more stick of ram as I only have 8GB atm and call it a day unless I decide to get a bigger SSD.

Look it up on amazon, or one of your local stores. Idk what it costs where you live, but its far cheaper than any of the g-sync monitors. The cheapest g-sync monitor is AOC2460pg, but the picture quality is so bad, that`im sure they put 30 dollars in the screen itself and the rest in build and g-sync module.

WHat monitor do you have now?

Absolutely horrible advice. There are hundreds of reviews on GSYNC monitors and none of the trusted reviewers share your thoughts. If you don't want to spend the money, don't. But don't work to sour people to something that not only works but offers a better gaming experience.

Did you really notice MUCH difference between non g-sync and g-sync while maintaining 100+ fps? And if you tell me you have a 60hz monitor, i wont even listen to you.

I take it you have tried g-sync? Reviewers are very often paid to keep their mouth shut about any flaws products may have. So, according to YOUR logic, the asus ROG swift line have had no issues, because reviewers said just positive things? Take a look at amazon customer reviews of the rog line, and tell me that im wrong.

I have had 5 g-sync monitors, so i know what i am talking about here mister. You sound like an Nvidia fanboy, even saying that what "reviewers say" is the truth. You dont find it wierd that all Nvidia based products recently only gets good reviews, even though customer reviews are completely different`?

I own a Acer Preditor. I've owned both ASUS and ACER monitors I've used the same monitor with Freesync. Both Freesync and GSYNC offer the same protection from tearing, GSYNC offers a noticeable difference in how fluid the gameplay is. Is that worth the cost, which is substantial? Totally subjective. But to discredit it because you had a bad experience or because you don't like the cost is fan behavior.

Both a Acer and a ASUS. I always run two monitors. Kept the Acer as a side monitor. Both were 1080p. But that's my experience. If you don't trust reviewers then that's your paranoia. They do get paid to review products, and their job depends on accuracy. If GSYNC was as bad as you say they would lose followers.

Only the Acer. Still kept it as the side because I like the picture better than the ASUS and I only use the side for multitasking not gaming.

But that's still besides the point. Would you tell someone to buy a 1060 because of what Nvidia says about it, or tell them to wait for the reviews. None of the trusted reviewers share your views on GSYNC. It's expensive, but it works.
