I'd start with Starcraft II and Rome: Total War for the side of Strategy. Both are really good even though they're very different in their mechanics. Both full priced games however.

We have a NEW and GLORIOUSER-ER-ER PSU Tier List Now. (dammit @LukeSavenije stop coming up with new ones)

You can check out the old one that gave joy to so many across the land here

Computer having a hard time powering on? Troubleshoot it with this guide. (Currently looking for suggestions to update it into the context of <current year> and make it its own thread)

Thanks for the suggestion. Yeah... I do think that good games are usually paid games.

For RTS for sure. It'll be hard to find a free to play strategy game. But there are less expensive options like Wargame: Red Dragon and Ashes of the Singularity and (if you catch it on sale) Civilization IV / V

I don't think I've ever seen one.

A good strategic shooter I can recommend is Heroes and Generals tho.

How about other genres, are there any good games and free?

If you're looking for free, check out MegaGlest. It's pretty old though... like 10-15 years old. And it gets boring pretty quick... and the graphics suck... but if you're looking for free...

I think Armored Warfare is a pretty fun game. You command a 1960s and up Main Battle Tank or support vehicle in arcade battles. I've had my fun playing that.

If you're into 2nd WorldWar fighter planes and tanks then you should have a look at WarThunder.

You can try out League of Legends for free as well, you control a Hero with different abilities and level up and eventually push into the enemy fortifications

why not check out the older games which are far cheaper? Try the original starcraft, or the original command and conquer games even (up to red alert 2, after that they're crap.) or if you want a newer game check supreme commander (forged alliance), which is amazing. There's plenty of cheap options out there just have to look a bit further in the past ;)

World of Warships is good and slightly "slower" and more strategic the. WoT or Armoured warfare. If you really want free strategy.

Other then that I have to agree, anything total war is always great. If you want a taster, grab Rome one, it's old but the mechanics and gold and it should be dirt cheap.

Bleigh!  Ever hear of AC series?
