Best OS for folding on an old computer

Hay there guys and gals, I've got an old computer that I've thrown together, the problem now is that the hdd i had thought that now would be a super awesome time to die. i don't really want to buy another copy of windows for this thing. someone suggested that i might be able to boot it with linux on a usb drive. So my question as a complete linux noob is basically is linux going to be the best option and if so what version of it? ubuntu? i really don't know, I've herd other folders like whaler_99 say they use ubuntu. the only thing this system is going to be used for is folding, just turn on, tell it to fold and walk away. Thanks in advance! :)

Edit: also if anyone could point me in the direction of an awesome intro to linux that would be super awesome :)

And then you realize your shoes are filled with peanut butter, what then?! >:L

I use Ubuntu. I havnt played with the the other "flavors" of Ubuntu, but as far as i can see its around the same as Windows XP in terms of how hardware intensive it is.
