FX8320 + Noctua = 75'C in Prime95

I am currently running my FX-8320 at stock settings (OC seems like a baaaad idea) with a noctua NH-U9B and in prime95 I am at constantly above 67'C with temps reaching upper 70s, early 80s, prime doesn't report any errors though. I idle at around 45'C which seems ok but holy crap it goes high as soon as I put any kind of load on it. Is this just me or do other people experience high temps with FX series? I've tried disabling the boost clock and I've tried undervolting...post-16575-0-46818100-1380535027.pngpost-16575-0-26730300-1380535172_thumb.p

I guess there are no random tasks running in the background? Check if you mounted your CPU cooler correctly. Screw the screws in in a cross pattern, half a turn after another until it sits fimly. I hope you applied only a little bit of thermal paste, not too much.

Try remounting your cooler with a very little smudge of Acrtic  Cooling Silver 5

who cares...

The CPU starts thermal throttling at 62', isn't it even a touch ridiculous that they amd sells a product that doesn't perform to its full capacity even with an basic after market cooler (everyone i've talked to agrees the stock cooler just simply doesn't work).

Is the heatsink nice and tight on the cpu?

Already tried remounting, used the thermal paste that shipped with the cooler.

Did the stock cooler work for you? I would get random reboots with it and idle temps were at 50+, it was louder than the average human talking too.

did you apply the right amount of thermal paste? too much thermal paste is worse than no thermal paste at all.

There would be quite a big uproar if the stock cooler didn't work. What's your case airflow like?

Antec 300 with stock fans so one in the top and one at the back in the top, basically there were 2 fans directly on the cooler.

then you did something wrong. amd stock coolers are some of the best "stock" coolers (especially the copper ones with heat pipes)

get some decent silver or diamond based thermal paste (not grease, not cheap stuff that looks and works like plasticine...)

my hyper 212+ came with some thermal compound with "cooler master" written on it (cheaply labeled), squeezed some out, looked like plasticine, never used it.

re-do everything and check linus's video on thermal management.

125W CPU with the U9B..yeah, I don't think so. I use the cooler myself because my old Lian Li cube case had the WORST internal layout I've ever used (my fault for choosing form over function) and the U9B was used because A) it was on sale at Newegg at the time and B ) It was one of the few towers that would fit in that case. The difference between you and I is that I have a 95w chip and SB doesn't require exotic cooling to get decent clocks.

If you don't wanna change the cooler, you could change the TIM. Either IC Diamond or PK-1 will do just fine.

Ok I don't think I did anything wrong, all the intel builds I have done have been fine. I think I'll get a better cooler and some decent thermal paste. If that doesn't fix it i'll return the chip, perhaps there's something wrong with it.

id say a big difference between idle temps and peak temps is a good indicator of "poor paste or application".

ive talked about this so many times privately maybe i should do a personal guide on it. (ive probably spent £30 on paste this year).

id of thought that cooler was okay (not a noctua fan but a tower is a tower, its hard to make a bad one mounting on the other hand can be bad).

you can often get a small oc on the stock cooler, you can get 4ghz (with an 8320) or slightly more on stock volts-stock volts=near stock heat. some have even been able to overclock and undervolt with 8350s.

I highly doubt your chips just producing heat for the fun of it, that would require it to be overvolting itself out of spec. try a few differnt softwares, the tj max could be set wrong, the bios might need updating, could be loads of things

....only just noticed your images, it says your 8350 has a low of 29 and a high of 54...were you looking at the cputin?

this might be worth a check..

These 8320s run like Haswells, hot, however I had no problems running mine on the stock cooler for a week while I RMA'd my liquid cooler (Which conveniently died, boiled the liquid inside, bursting one of the pipes before shutting my PC down) I think you may have problems with how you've mounted it, I'd suggest remounting it with a good bit of AS5, using a half pea sized dot in the middle, no spreading it.

Funny how when amd cpus run hot everyone mocks them, piledriver is allot better (i dont need to tell you that) but when ivybridge runs hotter than sandybridge intel fanboys are like "meh its fine so long as its below 70" and when haswell runs hotter still they're like "meh atleast its faster"...despite it doesnt clock as high...

double standards are a b****
