980 vs 980ti

can someone please explain the difference between these 2 cards in easy to understand terms (Ive googled it and read a bunch of specs, but it doesn't explain the difference in a very easy to understand way)

The 980ti has bigger physical die with more components inside of said die than the regular 980.

so the 980ti is better?  is upgrading from a 980 to a 980ti the same as a 960 to a 970 or 970 to 980?

Possibly.

If you're thinking about purchasing a 980/980ti, I would actually recommend purchasing a 1070 instead.

Yes there will be a 1080ti (probably by next year). The 1080 is already out!

980ti is better and yes i guess it would be a similar difference in performance(don't know the exact numbers)
don't know if there will be a 1080ti but i'd say yes there will be one

The 980ti is based on the GM200 GPU die which is the same has the Titan X...

Titan X has a fully enabled GM200 chip so all the 3072 cuda cores on the GPU are active where as the GTX 980ti is a slightly cut down version of that chip (a portion of the GPU has been disabled) so it has 2816 cuda core active. The GM200 core is roughly 601mm² and it consumes roughly 250W to 300W under full load.

 

The GTX 980 is based on another GPU, a smaller version of the GM200 called ''GM 204'' (GM stands for ''Geforce Maxwell'' since those GPU's are all based on the maxwell GPU architecture) ...the GTX 980 is a fully enabled GM204 core with 2048 cuda cores where as the GTX 970 is the ''cut down'' version of that GPU with only 1664 cuda core active...the GM204 chip is roughly 398mm² and consume around 165W to 200W.

 

Performance difference between GTX 980ti and GTX 980 is around 30%

And difference between GTX 980 and GTX 970 is roughly 15%

Technically there is a 590 and a 690 but they are both dual GPU cards.

The GTX 960 is based on an even smaller version of the chip called GM 206...this one has 1024 cuda cores, 227mm² and consume less than 150W

it's about 60% slower than a GTX 970...so, much weaker chip. (half as strong as a GTX 980)

Yes but later in the year and much much more expensive seeing the yield problems and cost of the 1080. Just look at the RX480X if you want something cheap
