Thoughts on AMD Zen

So I was wondering what your thoughts on AMD Zen after Computex. I'm looking forward to the 8 cores, hyperthreaded and the 40 more IPC from last gen AND the 95W TDP. I might skip on the 1231 and look forward to zen...

I dont know...I think I should give one. Being a youtube content creator, the more cores should benefit

I meant it in the sense that we have bugger all information about it, for it to be of any use. Wait until more information is leaked, and benchmarks are done.

My issue with your statement is that everyone says that for AMD, but when Intel announces the 6960X, everyone flips out.

Fanboys are always gonna over-hype anything they can. Personally, i'm quite hyped for the RX 480 but i'm just chillaxing whilst i wait for AMD to allow the independent reviewers to have their way with the cards.

The thing is, we don't know the pricing for this 8/16 Zen SKU. If it truly performs like a 5960X (and I'm hopeful it will), AMD has every right to charge $500 or more for it.

 

And I feel like your statement that when Intel released the 6950X everyone flipped is inaccurate and based on confirmation bias. I wasn't particularly excited for Broadwell-E, I don't build on those price ranges and it's not a new architecture with new technology, it's just a big version of Broadwell.

i'm waiting to make any opinions until i see more than one 3rd party benchmark.

Zen's IPC being better than Kabylake...that would be a proper laugh  

 

But in seriousness, if the 8-core is able to match the 5960x at a higher clock speed (4Ghz or something instead of 3.5) I would say success for AMD

You're just like the people who say that it's going be amazing. You're basing your claims off emotions and prejudice. "AMD was bad with one product line so they can't ever do good again" is just as bad as "AMD stuff is going to be great, I just know it!"

It's a new architecture after not releasing a new one for ages. The reason all their CPUs are terrible is because they're old as hell.

 

Zen is something new, something promising, and something we know next to nothing about, so we shouldn't make bold claims.

Personally I'm keeping my expectations tempered. We've heard this talk from amd before, so I'm waiting. I'd be happy if it closed the gap to ivy bridge levels though. 

 

What I want from Zen is a return to form. I'm talking Athlon/Athlon 64 levels of relative performance. But I know that's wishful thinking

Doesn't need to be. Most of us don't buy Core i7 Extreme Edition CPUs anyway.

AMD didn't give us a single bit of information we didn't already know about Zen at Computex, they just made the core count official news. We don't know enough about it to really say what its going to be like, we wont know until we see reviews in 3+ months time. What I think we can confidently say based on AMDs own statements is its not going to be a new high in performance, its something we already have but potentially cheaper.

I want an intel extreme edition processor, but THEY'RE SO DAMN EXPENSIVE (especially in australia). I'm hoping that AMD will bring an extreme cpu out, that measures somewhere close to intel in terms of performance, but maintains a price around the 500-700(aud) price. You know, what AMD usually does

didn't watch anything for computex so i have no idea about it, but my opinion stays the same, its either AMD's life savior or AMD's killer
