Will an i5-6500 Skylake bottleneck a GTX 1080 in any way?

fwright18

Very curious as I'd like to do a build with an i5 and a 1080, will this prevent the 1080 from its full capability?

even a 5930k overclocked to over 4 GHz can bottleneck it.  It depends what resolution and graphics settings you are trying to run.  If you are on 1080p that card is probably excessive.

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

Depends on the game, but most of the time no.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

I intend on mostly 1080p - no 4k for a while if that helps.

It's just that the more load you put on the GPU (higher settings, resolutions, etc.) the more likely that is to be the bottleneck instead of the CPU.   Which is generally what you want since CPU bottlenecks can cause very unpredictable frametimes and stuttering.

It shouldn't, but 1080 is really overkill for 1080p.

Resolution really doesn't matter in my experience, only the game you're playing. But if you're going to be at 1080p, just get a 1070 or a RX480.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

Sorry - I'm not very tech savy. So on 1080p and ultra settings on games like Hitman, GTA:V, Battlefield 1, do you reckon t'd be getting bottleneck?

If that's all you're doing, just get the RX 480. The 1080 is overkill and you won't see any benefit from it until you hit 1440p or 4k.

To see a bottleneck CPU wise you need a game like Cities Skylines. The i5 won't have a problem with most of the games out.

It's hard to say... GTA V tends to be a bit more CPU heavy than some games... I would just get the fastest clocked i5 you can (6600k) since whether it ends up being good or bad, you can't do better than the best possible :P

I mostly want the GTX 1080 for future proofing sake - and I'll be doing a bit of streaming/recording.

Then I would definitely recommend the 480 now and an upgrade later.  You'll likely be better off (a better match to your needs) and cost less

No such thing my friend. I have a EVGA 980ti Hybrid, I've had it for 6 months. Paid 740us for it and the 1070 at 400us can match it in some games.

Just buy the card that best fits your needs.

Then get a Gtx 1070 (which, btw, is still overkill for 1080p) and use the cash to swap the i5 for a 6700. Maybe even a 6700k + Z170. Or a capture card, if you intend to stream console games. Or an auxiliary monitor, so that you can see your game + chat at the same time.

But don't get the 1080. It's not suited for you.

it should not throttle on games at 1080p

It will not throttle because you won't buy a blower style card, will you? *stare*

get a GTX 1070 then...it will maxout games at 1080p for a long long time and it's much cheaper.

GTX 1080 is meant for 144hz 1440p or 4K...

i don't think any CPU on the market will keep up with a 1080 comfortably at 1080p and you'd need a 144hz monitor to see those frames.

Please, just get a 480, from what we've heard it will be the wake-up call Nvidia really needed

xD how? It's 200us for a 390 with 4g of VRAM. All it is.

Well, aside from Nvidia overpricing the pascal series outside the US, the 480 looks to be able to compete with the 1070 at a much more appealing price point. ( all rumors) but 2 480's performs better than a 1080 at a much better price point (AMD has always been better at multi GPU setups in my opinion). and it is well known that AMD always improves performance as drivers go on whereas team green tends to forget about supporting cards as new as one generation old.

First off the 480 in crossfire is not faster than a 1080, AMD got caught not using the same settings for both. And I've run Xfire so know it rarely works in games. AMD was using Ashes because it's the only game you don't need crossfire.

Second, the reason the drivers held better over time for AMD is that their cards were rebrands, well Polaris stops that. So we'll see how good of support Hawaii gets once it's replaced.

If you're streaming/recording, then you're going to want a very beefy CPU. Shadowplay is not a good solution and results in lower quality than standard CPU encoding with the same bitrate.

As for future proofing, then going NVidia has been a mistake in recent times. Hell, I'm not sure if even Pascal supports Async compute, and so isn't really suited to take advantage of DX12 improvements.

Basically, if you're goal is streaming/recording at 1080p, you're better off with an i7-5820k setup on X99 paired with an RX 480 than an i5-6500 paired with a GTX 1080. It'll cost less too, and be a much better setup.

I'm planning on doing 1080p streaming and recording, would this be a good build for 1080p and 2560x1080? Nothing use intense, the hardest game I play is GTAV occasionally, mostly F2P shooters and stuff like Smite and Rocket league
