HOW TO LEARN THE THINGS??

Title, basically. More specifically though I want to learn how hardware works. Or at least start learning how. Where would I go to find all of this stuff?

 

I ask because I may want to pursue a career that's more than just programming, tech support, etc. It might not be realistic but I honestly have no fucking clue.

YouTube is a cesspool of trash content and content that does a good job of wasting time by saying the same thing several times. Any suggestions on channels or videos?

I think deciding on something specific you want to know and then searching for that would be the way to go. That way you could decide what resources you want to use.

Reading a lot of the pinned topics on this forum you can gain a lot of knowledge. Follow topics that ask a question you don't know the answer too and you can learn the answer that way. Don't feel weird about following someone else's topic. If it's something you don't know follow it so you can learn. It's what I do and I've learnt more from this forum and videos from reliable YouTube sources than anywhere else on hardware. But buying a cheap and inexpensive book from a book retailer isn't always so bad either. If you find a specific piece of hardware you like do a lot of research on it in your own time. You'll find it more fun to read about the hardware and skills you love than reading new yorks best selling author.

I can't really think of a way other than typing that straight into every search bar you can possibly find.
Also if you can find any architecture manuals, or the booklet that comes when you buy a microprocessor, those could be helpful to read?

Otherwise keep asking around, eventually you'll find someone with a lot more experience in that area, or with access to resources you can really benefit from

kind like your post  most people on here on informed and helpful. and you cant really be bais on how something works, now on what works better yes, but on how the circtcs are timed to send messages at the same time, umm idk how that can be bias. it works how it works.

 

how i learned was a lot of google and questions on forums.

Yeah, but there are people like Enderman and zMeul around. They, for the most part, seem to just take a bit of knowledge off of somebody else's post and then post it somewhere in a comment, and when asked to elaborate can't give a great explanation. They also seem to miss a few bits of information and end up being totally wrong.

enderman is a good guy. the other idk him. but the best say really is to ask specific questions or watch techquickie and then google based on waht you see in those videos to learn more, and you have to be really interested becase a lot of it is super technical and will easily go over people's head and get boring.

I would recommend watching all of the LTT build logs.

I've only been watching their videos since January, never owned a gaming pc in my life until March, but I was already built and set up gaming PC's for 7 of my friends. All from watching LTT videos.

After a couple on months you will learn.

I would suggest just start by reading the Wikipedia article on microprocessors. While it probably isn't 100% accurate, it will give you a decent background.

If you want to get more into depth, you can read Intel's processor specifications here, or just Google "intel processor datasheet." It's 125 pages long (that's just Vol 1). AMD also has similar things, so you can look at that as well.

If you get bored of reading through 300 pages of Intel or AMD documentation, you can also google "microprocessor design". This will bring up some stuff on how to design microprocessors.

Okay. Here's some advice. I have a degree in Computer Engineering.

- Learn Assembly *
- Learn about Opcodes
- Learn what an ALU is
- Learn what an instruction decoder is
- Learn what the program counter and status registers are.
- Learn what a Load/Store unit is
- If you want to go right down to transistor level, learn about PMOS and NMOS, then learn about CMOS (Complimentary Metal-Oxide Semiconductors).
- Then learn about VLSI design

*Definitely start by downloading something like an ARM Emulator which shows you visually the execution of machine code/assembly. You can see all the different register values change and everything.

If you can, try and get a hold of an FPGA board... then when you're confident with the basic concepts see if you can knock up a basic CPU. Continue from there...

Get a bunch of old computers for free and just go to town. Take them apart put them together. Try things. Looks stuff up. Watch LinusTechTips, TechQuickie, EliTheComputerGuy. Just use the internet

Im not sure what your current level of knowledge is but if you are looking for a starting point i can personally highly recommend CompTIA A+ as an introduction to.... well..... all the things..... its a great well rounded course that will cover some of everything from hardware and software. Have a look online for the course materials and if you feel you're happy to do so after a while certification is easy (most places have centres for sitting exams for online accreditation). Professor James Messer is fantastic at delivering the course material and has a website and a youtube channel. From there if you want to specialise in one area you will have a greater understanding of how it all works and the terminology so researching online will be a lot easier. Also as mentioned above the techquickie series of videos from the LTT group are brilliant.
