Oculus Home update breaks ReVive compatibility

Today, the developer of Revive, who identifies simply as Libre VR, told Motherboard that a recent update to Oculus software has killed his hack. The update, which is still being rolled out to Oculus users, includes new “updated to platform integrity checks.”

According to Libre VR, what seems to be happening is that Oculus’ DRM now checks to see whether an Oculus Rift is connected to the PC when playing a game bought from the Oculus store.

The short of it is, that Oculus implemented a DRM into home that lets games bought on Oculus Home only start when a Rift is connected.

 

 

The official reason is to battle software piracy, which is complete nonsense. The only real thing it does is it disables ReVive to force people to buy into their hardware/software ecosystem.

The issue is people who expect us to officially support all headsets on a platform level with some kind of universal Oculus SDK, which is not going to happen anytime soon. We do want to work with other hardware vendors, but not at the expense of our own launch, and certainly not in a way that leads to developing for the lowest common denominator - there are a lot of shitty headsets coming, a handful of good ones, and a handful that may never even hit the market. Keep in mind that support for the good ones requires cooperation from both parties, which is sometimes impossible for reasons outside our control.

On another note, I disagree with most of your post, and I think you are either misunderstanding or misrepresenting several important points, but that does not change my answer.

"Only on Oculus" does not mean "Only on Rift". If it did, we would not be using the same line for both Rift and GearVR, the two headsets our store and platform currently support.

And even then it wouldn't work, solely because neither Microsoft nor Sony ever said that they are ok with doing it.

I have the vive and honestly I don't care. All the rift games are crap xbox controller games. The vive is probably the coolest thing I've ever experienced in my life. 

 

Currently my girlfriend is behind me playing job simulator, having a blast. She was very skeptical of vr and hates video games. Really shows how good vr is.

 

Fuck Facebook. They're digging their own grave.

Oculus have already explained that hacks like Revive would probably break in the course of software updates, so you're just bringing this up again to bash on Oculus.

 

Their approach is the walled garden, and that has pros and cons. It keeps out the Chinese knockoff VR headsets but also has collateral damage like this.

You don't see something wrong about a company that based its product on stolen tech, built hype by repeatedly deceiving their customers and trying to lock people into their ecosystem while taking the high road and preaching how they wanted a open VR plattform without restrictions?

The problem is not Ocuius protecting their investment. It's that Palmer lucky has stated that their software would be hardware agnostic, which is clearly not true.

I'm sorry, but I don't have a horse in either company... I don't think VR will be good for at least a few years, but it's been proven multiple times that building an eco system is the best way to profit. Every company does that now when they are able to. I actually think Oculus has been pretty generous since the beginning, affordable kits, and giving out free retail kits to backers. If they want to build their own ecosystem then more power to them, and they have a right to protect that ecosystem from hacks.

your so called answer isn't really one.

This isn't a scenario in which a software update broke compatibility as colateral damage, this updates only function was to break compatibility and nothing else. There's a big difference between those two.

It is a hack. That doesn't make it a good or bad thing, it's just a relevant description of a kludged unofficial software solution.

I give it 2 weeks and it works again on Vive. You can't stop people

I hope someone comes up with an oculus emulator of some kind, even if it has to be some type of dongle that you plug in your PC and it pretends to be an oculus.. to bypass this type of restrictions.
