"Custom GPU's"

Imaginary Friend

So what's up with these "custom" 1080 coming out?

I have a Asus 970 and everyone is talking about that evga is way better card then a asus one.

When are the 1080 "Custom GPU's" coming out?

Ah ok so there's no difference between like how many cuda cores they have or something like that?

No because AIB partners do one of 2 things- put stickers on a reference cooler, or make a custom pcb using the same gpu (think of it as using the same cpu but with a "better" motherboard) and better cooler.

no, they just have slightly different board designs and maybe power delivery.

general specs are exactly the same

EVGA is better because they have many version with high factory OC levels. The high OC speed ones will usually have better power delivery due to modified PCB

CPU: Ryzen 2 2700@ 4.0Ghz    Mobo: Gigabyte X470 Gaming 7 Wifi    Cooler: EVGA CLC 240    GPU: GTX1080 FTW DT @ 2113Mhz   PSU: EVGA 750W P2

I'm guessing some of the aftermarket 1080 cards will have more power delivery for higher OC's

Actually, 3 things:

-Reference Card

-Reference PCB w/ Aftermarket Cooler

-Custom PCB w/ Aftermarket Cooler

I wonder if anyone's done a custom PCB with a reference cooler...

Doesn't make sense, but... I mean, it could happen...

Very true.

It's unlikely because the VRMs might not be properly cooled, the ram might be arranged differently and won't be properly cooled as well, and not to mention a custom PCB is made for higher overclocking, so the reference cooler won't be able to cope with the higher tdp.

I've got a Reference PCB with a aftermarket cooler and love it, not sure I'd get anything else after having it. I've always had custom cards and dealt with instability, my Hybrid does not suffer from this and still overclocks to within 30mhz of a MSI lightning. I probably got lucky but still, it shows that a custom PCB isn't necessarily the best option.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

EVGA is better, because if you put water cooling on card, you won't void any warranty.

If you remove stock cooler from any other card manufactur, it will void warranty and you can't return you product if something goes wrong.

Not sure how does warranty apply for that founders edition card.

Other brands has their own good points that others like. The reason people on forums like this like evga so much is because those card overclock well. I for one like MSI because that brand focuses alot more on making their fans run quieter than other names.

like i said, everyone has different priorities when it come to what they want. He needs to first figure out what he wants before deciding which is the best for him.

The main issue is Asus generally don't make the best custom coolers. Some of the good ones are Zotac, EVGA, MSI and Gigabyte.

From what I heard, the board partners have had time to work on their aftermarket coolers and should be available on launch day, if not a few days after.

I think it just depends on the card. They have had some bad eggs when it comes to AMD cards and I'm fairly sure most other AiB partners produce better cooling solutions. Here is an example http://www.legitreviews.com/nvidia-geforce-gtx-980-ti-video-card-roundup-asus-msi-and-zotac_176648/11

Asus is not bad per se. They're just outdone by other AiB partners.
