Why this is such a big deal is because almost all of the consoles, portable or home entertainment till now have been containing at least AMD GPUs. The Nintendo Wii, Wii U, Playstation 4, Xbox 1 and many more. I think Nintendo got really excited with the Pascal architecture. Maybe Nintendo's partnership with AMD will end and they will join hands with Nvidia. But this obviously doesn't mean AMD will be living under bridge. With their upcoming Polaris architectural GPUs, I don't think Sony and Microsoft will stop using their hardware just yet.

You forgot about the Tegra: "Nintendo NX will powered by an NVIDIA Tegra processor, not an AMD chip". This actually gets me worried about the NX, not only would be sitting in a different hardware platform making porting harder, I'm not that confident with Nvidia's Tegra SoC (remember the Chromebooks with the Tegra?).

I seriously doubt that. Tegra is useless and I cannot see Nintendo going with a 2 chip solution (CPU/GPU).

The consoles uses Jaguar cores.

I assume new consoles will use either Jaguar or ZEN cores.

Well, the chromebook's Tegra chip obviously wasn't Pascal-based. And maybe this is an advancement to it. Only time can tell.

I doubt any of these new consoles will be out before Q4. Actually I believe the PS4.5 will be out by the holidays or beginning of next year if I recall correctly.

Tegra is an ARM architecture CPU. Pascal is a graphics architecture. They have nothing in common except the node they can be made on.

It's CPU wise is where I'm worried not graphic wise, I don't think Nvidia has the licensing nor capabilities to start making X86 (don't quote me on that), which means a ARM CPU.

I remember the good ole days when the Wii out sold the PS3 and Xbox360 for years straight. I still use my Wii to this day. Games like Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros Brawl, and Mario Party still don't show their age. Nintendo just needs to focus on getting a solid cheap console with lots of family and big group games. Everything else you can forget about. Just no stupid Eula or rules either

Well according to VRWorld, PS4.5 will be released in September. Which I just found out now. But yeah I get your point.

What are you guys talking about? Of course Nvidia can make a new Tegra chip with a Pascal iGPU in it. Tegra is just a brand name for their SOCs, they have used a variety of architectures (Tegra K1 used Kepler, Tegra X1 uses Maxwell).

The NX being ARM based makes more sense to me if the system is going to be a hybrid-portable, and if they want to keep the price down, which seems like the Nintendo I know.

 

Could be either x86 or ARM based though (depends on what Nvidia is doing for the next Tegra) - this rumor doesn't confirm much beyond that Nintendo may be working with Nvidia instead of AMD.  Personally it doesn't matter to me whether devs will bellyache over this or not, because I do not buy Nintendo systems for 3rd party games, and Nintendo hasn't made their systems 3rd party friendly since the SNES.  Either way, their next gen console is going to have its work cut out for it being sandwiched between the enthusiast and mobile platforms.  Their IPs always sell their systems and will continue to do so.

if this is a thing its certainly an interesting move by nintendo, seeing both there past consoles were PowerPC and ATI/AMD for the gpu.

 

maybe PowerPC has gone over its peak even in the console world, and nintendo is looking elsewhere. i'm honestly more curious about what else is gonna be in there beyond the main chips as we saw more than a tenfold in memory increase between the wii and wiiu.

This is going to be bad.... Nvidia GPUs aren't cheap. Unless by magic they changed decision on this, and giving away their GPU for free, or near that for Nintendo, I highly doubt that this any true. AMD is not making a lot of money despite powering all 3 current gen console. This is also why, all consoles with Nvidia chip was released with a too high price, and not to mention that the next gen console they don't deal with Nvidia again, due to, once again, higher price chips, forcing the push of a too high console price.

 

As Nintendo said that they wont' be selling the console at a loss, I doubt people would be interesting in paying 600-700$ for their console.

 

All I can think about is that the Tegra chip will be in the game pad for off screen, out of the house, game play (like the 3DS). So basically a portable gaming system + home console.
