Sounds more like a problem with the hardware being defective first and the driver finishing it off.

what you read is PURE bullshit...a driver CAN NOT broke a GPU...it's just NOT fucking possible. end of the story. you're crazy if you really think something like this can or did happened. The only thing that really happened was AMD driver locking fans to 20% killing power hungry R9 290/290X cards...that DID happened.

 

A driver update is not a firmware or BIOS update...it's a fucking driver. It can crash if you OVERCLOCK TOO MUCH and put the card out of stability like the OP did on this topic and then you can complain all you want, fact remain those drivers are certified and they work...100%.

In laptops, the GPU controls display brightness via PWM - a driver has direct control over that and can easily fry the senstitive electronics by pushing absurd values. Laptops are NOT the same as desktops - hence why that driver only killed laptop LCDs

On a funny note. My laptop's MR HD4250 when enabled under Catalyst 13.4 doesn't allow me to control the brightness of the screen. While the MR HD5650 under the same driver does. Going back to the ones from HP (Catalyst something from 2010) and I can control the screen brightness with both dGPU (but the laptop idles and runs a lot warmer).
