New GPU :D

I am 90% sure that I am going to get the r9 390 (MSI) GPU but I still want opinions so I don't make the wrong purchase 

 

1. I have never had a AMD gpu before, what are the drivers like?  (Well I did, a r7 240. I am not counting that) 

2. What is the temps like for the r9 390

3 Is the 970 a better choice overall? 

 

Any comments welcome, Whatever the final lout come of this post, I'll buy it tonight

The 970 and 390 are near enough the same, But since Nvidia has the gameworks I would go with Nvidia, And ATM with experience AMD drivers are so shi*ty atm

Generally 970 is slightly weaker than the 390.

The temps are fine with a good cooler (and the MSI one has a good cooler).

 

Note: If you can wait 2 months for a GPU upgrade, I HIGHLY recommend doing so as Polaris and Pascal should bring massive improvements-this isn't your ordinary process node jump as it is two process node jumps+FinFET so in 2 months your GPU's worth will be probably more around 150-200 dollars. If you can wait, at this point you should.

depending on the cooler: pretty good. Not a whole lot higher than cards in a similar price range

I'm in no rush to get a new GPU. I've got a strix (2gb) 960 so I could wait for the new cards

In that case I would recommend you wait 2 months.

Drivers are just as good on AMD compared to Nvidia. Sometimes you have some new games that dont have special drivers or doesn't really work on day 1, but that doesn't happen often and Nvidia's drivers are not the best ever either

1. Drivers have been fine in my experience. The new catalyst control centre is better than the nVidia equivalent imo (own both nvidia and amd)

2. Temps are fine with my 390, I get about 70 degrees while playing the witcher 3 maxed out.

3. No, unless you prefer a green GUI.

Drivers for AMD cards are "better" than nVidia's for the moment. And, nVidia Gameworks hurts performance on both nVidia and AMD. Sucks.

 

If you want to wait a few months, Polaris and Pascal should come out and you'll see the performance gains from the new architectures. The thing is, a 490 or whatever it'll be called will be expensive for a while, so it might be worth it to buy a 390. We don't know the future though.

owner of 2 390's

 

1. always had amd never had a problem not even with drivers

2. its a hot card find a very good cooler and don't plan on OV

3. 970 its better if you run low res like 1080 anything above the 390 is better. Or you like nvidia features or they cool and quite operation.

 I like the 390 because of the 8 gb I find my self using mostly over 5 gb on the games I play with 2 way xfirex

AMD's drivers are no better or worse than Nvidia's. Ignore any fucker that tells you otherwise.

Temp-wise, the R9 390 can hit ~76c whilst stress testing. Which is absolutely fine. Heck, my old GTX 980 hit 83c easily, and those temps were fine.

No, the 970 is overall a worse choice. Yes, some titles that use Nvidia Gimpworks will perform a bit better on the GTX 970, but the R9 390 will either match it or beat it without Nvidia Gimpworks. And one BIG factor to take into account AMD cards support asynchronous compute where as Nvidia cards do not. And it's a pretty big feature that will boost performance in DirectX 12.
