Cheapest possible build with a 980Ti and 4core/8threads?

Trav_X

What's the best balance of a 980Ti and an i7 at the best price point?

i was thinking a Xeon E3-1231 v3, sounds like a good idea. I also need an SSD for boot as I already have a hard drive. I also have DDR3 ram so that cuts costs.

is this good?

ah well, ill just assume its for rendering work with gaming on the side since you opted for an i7-ish cpu

comments:

Spoiler

1) would personally pick 850 evo ssds, though that ocz drive is fine as well i guess

2) would pick a better psu, i recommend the EVGA SuperNOVA G2/P2 650W

That looks like a good build although I have some questions

1. People have said that a 240GB is best for boot, since you can also store a bunch of essential programs on there besides just an OS and a few files

2. I've heard Kingston SSD' aren't very reliable, and that some of them In certain series perform way lower that advertised

3. Is the 6600k good? I'm worried about my lack of hyperthreading considering I want to do stuff like Streaming, Game Recording while playing intensive games, and other CPU intensive tasks, but nothing extreme. Will I be okay with just the 4 cores 4 threads?

1. Correct. A 240GB SSD would be better because it has a better price to performance & capacity ratio.

2. Kingston SSDs are good except that SSDNow V300 series unfortunately because it has been having issues with a lot of people.

3. An i5 is more than enough if you will be streaming using Nvidia ShadowPlay, it has negligible or no impact on game perfomance.

2. not all kingston SSD has issues, just their V300, you can learn more about it here

The Xeon 1231v3 is just like an i7 4770 execpt it does not have an iGPU. It does fine in gaming. Not all "Xeons" are bad for gaming.

Watch this video and you'll get an understanding:

Thanks for the builds, I'll definitely check those out :) I'm probably gonna be using ShadowPlay or OBS for recording/streaming, I'll tune some settings for finding a balance between video quality, frame rate, etc.

For DDR4, I'm not a big Crucial fan, I usually go HyperX since I absolutely love my 2x 8GB DDR3 HyperX Blues.

You would want a little heftier CPU cooler with the 6700K.  Maybe a Cryorig H7 or better.

I've seen skylake not booting with crucial ballistix sports ram about 2 times now, and the issue is solved when they swapped the ram to hyperx or vengeance lpx

so i generally only would recommend hyperx or vengeance lpx, and avoid ballistix sports `-` though i heard g-skill ram is fine too, not sure

Oh really :o

You would want a little heftier CPU cooler with the 6700K.  Maybe a Cryorig H7 or better.

If I go 6700k, I kinda want to OC, so an AIO might be necessary :P although I don't know how to fit it in the budget

Please tell me you already have a 4k display or 1440p 144hz display for that 980ti, otherwise it would be a waste if your display is low end. Plus new GPUs are coming soon anyways, and Maxwell cards lack proper DX12 support seemingly

and a  5820K is going to be a better buy than a 6700K as the 6700 already turbos to 4ghz and MSI makes some solid 1151 budget boards.

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

I'll probably be going for a 3440x1440 display for productivity and gaming. Not super intense games, but at that res I can't use a simple 960 or like a 380x for games. The reason my budget is so low at $1200 about is because the display is like $700 alone. I do plan on waiting for the next generation of Pascal cards and probably Broadwell-E. A 5820k is in my budget and I'm thinking about it, since it's less than $300 at MicroCenter which is near me.
