It's kinda tech, but it's more related to the use of the tech.

Summary: The CEO of AMC-Entertainment feels we, the cell phone user (specifically millennials), should not be told to turn off your cell phone.

One of the biggest annoyances I have with people in movie theaters because they can't practice common courtesy is going to be as allowed and encouraged? Awesome. One more reason to not go to AMC theaters.

 

Seriously though, how hard is it to leave your phone in your pocket for 2 hours? Learn how to disconnect, people

I generally don't mind AMC Threatres (they took over a local independent threatre a few years ago)  it's not too bad but does get spendy.

Though I think it's be dumb and rude to allow people to use their phone in a theatre.

I think that you shouldn't have to turn it off but at least put it on vibrate or silence and leave in your purse or pocket or where ever you carry your phone.

I think it is really dumb to let them allow that, I find it annoying when people are loudly eating popcorn during a quiet scene in a movie.  I found this tweeted at Adam Savage and I think it is an awesome policy.

Do you know why people are told not to text during a movie? Because your little smartphone makes a lot of light. It's distracting, for me it hurts my eyes, and it's really annoying. Sure, if the phone is on silent it doesn't make any noise, but how difficult is it to not look at your phone for 2 hours? If you can't disconnect from your perpetually narcissistic social media for the duration of a feature film, then please get the fuck out and watch movies at home. Assholes.

 

My opinion? The CEO of AMC is a joke. Pandering to stereotypes. My 21y/o cousin can't stand people that use their phones in the theaters. Hell, he hates people that talk during a movie. I'm sure if you actually asked a bunch of moviegoers if they enjoyed spending half the movie on their phones, their response would be "why would I use my phone during a movie?"

^ I totally agree. The last few movies I went to, it was so annoying when someone next to or in front of me would whip out their silent cell phone and turn on their billion candlepower screen lighting up half the theatre. I exaggerate a little. I have a Note5 and I can tell you the number of times I've turned it on from my bedside nightstand and felt like I was watching a nuclear bomb test (even on the lowest manual setting).

 

This isn't limited to just movie theatres. I've gone to other theatre shows where cameras/cell phone use is not permitted, and still, some jerk is in front of me recording the show on his iphone with full display brightness.

If someone needs to use their phone during a movie, take it outside to the lobby. A business has every right to ask you to leave the premises if you have a problem with that.

 

Unrelated, but the AMC near me is my favorite movie theater because it has a bar where you can bring your drink into the movie with you!

A. If you just paid the like $10-20 for a movie why would you be on your phone? Thats a waste of money.

B. They should reserver the upper rows (near the projector) for people with phones so the others can't see the light and maybe have them in a glass box for noises (?)

If my local theatres allowed texting during movies, I would complain to management. Every time. Despite it being allowed.

 

I don't ever shut my phone off during a movie. But I do put it on silent, and don't take it out until the credits roll.

 

In my local theatres, they show "don't text" PSA's right before the movie starts (after previews are over).

Might work for an Indie theatre that specializes in art films, etc. But AMC survives off big blockbuster ticket sales.
