I would say a huge part of this is what we do with those PC's. Unless your parent is some kind of graphics artist or editor, odds are all they do is browse and maybe use it for media, where as Gaming (being the primary 'young people' thing) requires a better system. I know for a fact that I have a better PC than all of my in-laws and parents PCs as I built them all, haha. I also have a better smartphone, and car....

might be because parents have reduced needs for pcs, internet browsing, ms stuff etc, also they grew up with bad pc's so cant comprehend the extra power

Yeah i'm 16 and i have a dell 7559 and a PC with an i5 and gtx 750ti which i don't use a lot, as i'm usually not at home. My dad has a old hp probook form 2005 and my mom has my old phemon 9850 pc which she uses occasionally. I have earnt the money myself through a part time job before you say i'm spoilt and i'm the only one who does anything that pushes the hardware. My folks just use them for browsing and office.

tbh this was pointed more towards teenagers as we have limited income compared to our parents. thanks for the response though :)

My PC is the only good one in the family. My mum doesn't use a PC, She uses her iPhone. My dad has a Dell Tablet. Not sure which one. My sister has a Laptop from 2009 or 2010. Brother also has a Laptop.

computer wise, my parents just need a laptop for facebook

they dont need a gtx 970 just to browse facebook at 60fps `-`

for smartphones, my parents had better phones than me (2 z2 that i bought for them) until i changed my z1 to a z3 `-`

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

They use their pc as a tool to watch yt and read news etc, eg they don't need more horsepower. Mom has a dell studio laptop from pre 2000 with ddr2 and dad has no pc at all. He's more the tv guy and uses a tablet to check something online, if even.

I can see that, coming to the 30's in age I already feel too old for this whole "gaming, OP" stuff. My next pc probably will only have i3 and sdd but no gpu. Usage for them has moved hence the care less about specs.

They don't even know what an ssd is. Still they got my old one to speed up this dinosaur they have.

Until the day I bought my own PC I was using my parent's PC... But since then yes my PC has always been (allot) better because what I used it for demanded that where as neither parents used the machine for anything demanding.

Even when my dad started gaming it didn't need really good hardware because the game wasn't that demanding (he played StarCraft 2).

Stating all this, the period between 2009 and 2011 I ran a machine with a Q6000, 4GB RAM and a 8800GT as my primary machine due to the faster machine breaking down and me just not really caring as it would do the job well enough most of the time... So it is debatable if I "needed" a beast machine myself most of the time. :P

Unless my kids pay for it themselves, or one of the granparents do, My wife and I wll have the nice pc. Now if they buy all the stuff themselves to build a nice one, i will be more then happy to help them build it, other then that they will mostly get hand me downs from mine system or my wifes system as we upgrade to newer stuff.

Way nicer. That is because they need a simple business pc for their work and to watch youtube and stuff on it, and I need mine for photo and video editing and gaming.

It's a generational thing, to be simply put. Rather than making it into something more complex, put it as: our parents come from a generation where the automobile industry was king, and was making HUGE milestone leaps ahead from a short time. The thing with our generation (I am 25), we are reverse... cars are becoming more boring and universally "the same", where that industry has become stagnant in terms of mind-blowing tech. Sure, Tesla, Audi and others are making commonly already known improvements; they're actually just refining what's ALREADY known. However, the personal computer industry is making GINORMOUS leaps into sectors we had no idea we'd end up in. Food for thought.
