2xGTX 770s on 650w?

Hi, so Im s]using my other account on the forum today, but nonetheless I should be able to check replies for this topic

To get to the business, I have a 4690k running at 4.5ghz, Hyper 212 evo, with a single hard drive, one ssd, and 5 case fans. I have a single GTX 770 4gb twin frozr, all of that running on an evga 80+ gold 650w power supply. I have decent frames running on a 1440p monitor, but I would like to see more performance. My friend offered me a great deal on another GTX 770 4gb. However, I feel like 2 GTX770s in sli would not be able to be handled by my PSU (650w). Note that I will not be doing any overclocking. Will this be okay to run, or should I call off the deal and upgrade in the future? Thanks.

The TDP for the cars is around 200 so you should be good

It's pushing it. Kepler is not Maxwell, 770s use 200-240W depending on the OC and power settings. You'll be pretty close to the cap. If your PSU is not a good quality one you might end up with unforeseen consequences

280 uses 50W less

That's actually not correct when talking about the 380. The 190W TDP is for TongaXT mainly - the 380X. The 380 at stock settings is around 150W. Why do I believe this? Look here.

The boards' overall power consumption from idle to load is excellent really. Expect an idle wattage of roughly 10 Watts and, when the monitor goes into power save mode, the card throttles down even lower towards 3 Watts. The TDP for the 7850 we measured at roughly 110W and the 7870 at 130 Watt.

AMD advertises the board power at 130W (7850) and 175W (7870), board power is different then the TDP. If you try and visualize the power control settings slider in the Catalyst center, then you'll realize that you can increase it 20% meaning at default the TDP is roughly 20% lower then AMD's 130W for the 7850 and 175W for the 7870.

  • Reverse calculate that and at default the TDP for 7850 would be 130Wx0.80=104W
  • Reverse calculate that and at default the TDP for 7850 would be 175Wx0.80=140W
As you can see, a 380 is around 140-150W stock and maybe 190W OCed to the max. 380X is around 170W stock and 200W-ish max OC.
My point stands

A 280, listed as 200W actually uses 160W

You should have mentioned the brand - just 280 is more commonly associated with the R9 280
