Doesn't mean a market won't develop. Razer will push this to mainstream users who currently don't know about it. Companies don't base all their decisions based on the number of people buying a product.

To the people complain about the price: Intel charges alot for the license to use the full thunderbolt speed which is probably being passed down to you.  Without the license the device will be limited to 10Gbps (for thunderbolt2 I'm not sure what it is for tb3) which in something like a graphics card dock being limited to TB1 speeds can have a 30-50% performance hit.

I was going to buy this and a high end gpu (980, 980ti, or 1080) though with the enclosure costing almost as much as the gpu I'm not anymore. Here's hoping the enclosure that ASUS showed at CES comes in at a better price. ASUS all you have to do is give me something that can get me a 980ti for under $900 and you have a buyer.

I am probably in the minority of wanting the top of the line graphics for my laptop in my dorm. Most people are probably going to want to use something like a 960 or 970 which doesn't make sense when the enclosure costs substantially more than the card.

Idk man, remember you'd be paying for the GPU also. So GPU aside, for under $500 I can get my CPU, Motherboard, 8GB RAM, and Storage, with $50 still left for PSU/Case (if you go for an HDD vs an SSD). If you already have a monitor, that's even less you'd need to spend. You're still buying the GPU either way, but the desktop will outperform the laptop hands down. And it's not terribly old stuff, LGA 1150 with a decent GPU (one you'd be buying anyways with the Core) will still perform quite well for most games at 60 FPS.

pretty standard non-overclocking i7 (xeon with 4c8t but is essentially a 4790 with the price of an i5) mixed with a 980Ti build

sure you MIGHT get a slightly better gaming experience, but games nowadays arent really dependent on cpu horsepower (not to mention that laptop's cpu nowadays are pretty impressive themselves)
but you're giving up the elegance of having your files and folder in one place <--- important point for a lot of people

 

while i disagree that it is overpriced if you calculate it that way,

i also agree that it cost too much for essentially a psu, a small extension board with usb and pci e ports with a metal housing, but you have to factor in development cost and what not as this is somewhat the first launch of this type of product

Definitely get where you're coming from though now, I wasn't really factoring in the convenience of having a desktop rig which was easily portable as you mentioned. Sure, the Core/GPU will be a bit hefty, but nothing compared to a full desktop rig as you say. I guess it just depends on what type of rig you are looking for  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'm not saying it should be cheap, I'm saying that the profit margin is too high on the hardware. It should be $300-350. First launch and Dev cost is supposed to be paid for by sale numbers not by inflated pricing on individual units.

Just a thing about how overpriced this is: The proprietary alienware graphics amplifier is $200 (Correction: original MSRP was $300). The alienware doesn't have the 4 usb and ethernet like the razer core but I have a $20 3 usb + gigabit ethernet hub that I am using right now so that doesn't justify the cost.

The cost of developing sand and copper into a processor is not comparable to the cost of sourcing parts to make a dock. The cost of making software work on 'sand and copper' is also not comparable to making drivers for that software that make the dock work correctly. That's not to say processors aren't also over priced but it is to say your analogy is the same level of absurd as comparing the pain of dropping a brick on your boot with the pain of childbirth.

The thing is there is a ton of development behind an intel/nvidia processor. Razer has taken an existing concept and adapted it to intels thunderbolt 3 interface. Alienware did the same thing and sold it for $300 (you can get it for $200 now), and also developed their own interface to use.

This is the #1 reason why I pre-ordered the new Blade 14 immediately and will be doing the same once the Core is up for pre-order. I use my laptop for the majority of my work and only use my desktop for gaming that requires something more powerful than a GTX 970m and for running code that may require more CPU power and RAM than what is in my laptop (which is pretty rare). $500 is a small price to pay to finally be able to get rid of my desktop PC and not worry about installing programs twice and making sure files are constantly synced between multiple PCs.

well it was always going to get the razer mark up it just depends if you really want a desktop experience While being able to unplug it and take it with you.

So articles on the price and release date for this are popping up and then disappearing. 15 mins ago there was one on Kotaku but it is gone now, So either Razer has released the info and there is an embargo on publishing that info and some sites are posting before the embargo is lifted (most likely) or someone posted the wrong info and other sites are realizing it (the answer I want).

The official price is up. $700 + $65(shipping) + 1.13%(tax) is roughly $856 not including markup from third party vendors.

Imo, an empty aluminum box with an unspecified psu, and a few led strips is definitely not worth $856. 

 

Alternatively, the Asus ROG XG2 enclosure will most likely have a better value.
