R9 390x or GTX 980?

I'm building a pc for roughly 1500$.  I've been trying to figure out for awhile if I should go with the R9 390x or GTX 980.  The 980 seems to be a bit more expensive, so I've kind of been in favor of the 390x.  But I've never used an AMD graphics card before, and I usually see Nvidia cards for the more "high end" used cards.  This is my parts list so far:

The 980 is a slightly faster card.

 

I recommend the 980, better driver support, lower power consumption.

If you have the time and patience, I can't recommend eBay enough.  You can easily get parts over $100 cheaper than buying new and they have a money back guarantee, so you don't have to worry about being screwed over.

I recommend the i7 4770k instead of the i7 6700k and don't pay for windows 10 but that's unrelated :3

The 980 is faster. I'd go for the 390x 8G but that's probably because I'm an AMD fanboy.

I'd honestly say the 390X.

In dx12 the 390X is outperforming the 980ti, sooo... Asynch is a thing, and nvidia's little bandaid solution of adding software support for it doesn't appear to be working as well as they claimed it would.

 

But that's subjective, im a bit of an amd fanboy. Though, for roughly the same price here in the US you can get a powercolor devil 390X (Hybrid card) for a base model evga 980, and when it comes to that its kind of plays out like this. The 980 performs about 15% faster NOW, in games that don't use dx12. The 390X will perform about 15% better LATER in games that use dx12.

The 980 is probably one of the worst value cards you can buy, the 390X is slightly slower for a lot less. See how expensive a Fury is preferably from Sapphire.

Isn't the Fury around the price of a 980 with better performance in all areas?

both are good.

I think the 980 is slightly faster once both are overclocked to the max so get the 980 if similarly priced.

if the 390x is cheaper then get that.

yes fury is certainly a more powerful card and if it's in the price range of 980 should be a no-brainer

R9 Fury(non X) if you like/want red!

I'd say 390X - better value, double the VRAM, MUCH better DX12 performance, similar DX11 performance, currently has better drivers (yes, Nvidia's latest drivers are godawful - feel free to test them and prove it, I certainly don't need more system freezes) and comes with features such as Free-sync, True Audio, Bridgeless CF, GPU Open, vastly superior OpenCL support.
