Best Core 2 Duo E8400 overclock ever?

System specs: Core 2 Duo E8400 processor, Gigabyte P45 DS3P motherboard, 4GB DDR2 800 RAM, MSI GTX 650 1GB graphics.

Overclock details: 4.2GHz @ 1.300V, RAM speed at 967MHz, 0.1V FSB/PCI/RAM overvoltage, and that's about it.

I did my stress testing at 33 deg. Celcius (91.4 deg. F) room temperature, so ambient temperature was actually pretty hot.

The Deepcool IceEdge Mini CPU cooler is also kinda shitty, it's basically one of the smallest aftermarket CPU air coolers.

Nevertheless, this is easily the best overclock I've ever got with an aircooled Core 2 Duo, if I had a bigger cooler I could probably bump up the Vcore and multipler to run at 4.4GHz (without water-cooling).

Mine hits 3.7ghz without overvolting, and after that the sata controller doesnt work :(

I knew someone who owned a liquid cooled 5ghz core2quad

You know I actually tried a different Core2Duo E8400 and could only manage 3.8GHz @ 1.325 Vcore, even though they were identical, so the one I've got now really seems like a silicon lottery win.

I just need a better motherboard to be honest. You are raising the (what I assume to be the equivalent to today's) baseclock?

Because the e8400 does not let you set multipliers above the stock one?

Huh weird, it must be your motherboard then because I've always been able to change the multiplier and just left the base clock (equivalent to modern BCLK?) at 9MHz.

To get 4.2GHz I just set the multiplier at 467 to get 467 x 9 = 4203MHz, it's always worked for the Gigabyte motherboards I've used.

Alright, I guess that was the multiplier I was thinking of, and 9 was the baseclock.

Asus had to make the naming retarded.

After 411 the HDD is not seen.

Increase SATA + SB voltage if your board lets you, or try run IDE mode instead of AHCI:)

The bus speed is the big number (which quad pumps to be the FSB speed) and the ratio is indeed 9. He got them mixed up :P

Neither of my board have them mixed up (Rampage Extreme, P5Q) :(

But what I said was the correct way nonetheless :P

Mine will run 4700MHz 1.4V (With LLC). It didnt scale on LN2 though only 5.5GHz -105c

RAM ~1700MHz 6-8-5-18

Wow you must be running 1066MHz RAM, 'cause none of my DDR2 800 kits will go above 1000MHz without causing instability. Regardless of RAM overvoltage, it seems.

I've tried getting hold of some better RAM but the Ebay pricing is absolutely ridiculous (about $80 for 4GB) considering that it's old gear now.

1200MHz 4-4-4-12 2.4V on DDR2. With my Rampage Extreme I run 1800 6-8-5-18 (DDR3). Can run 5GHz all day long on my E8400. Sadly it has an FSB wall at ~602 FSB where it will just not work. Even tried LN2 and it said no :(

For overclocking 1GB sticks are better. Lower density = higher clocks.

You want to find Micron D9 based ICs. Tactical Tracers are a good place to look.

My E8500 hit 4.5GHz, and its just a slightly better binned chip...

So I'd have to use my Team 2GB kit instead of my Kingston and Corsair sticks?

Yeah, minimum ram speed is 1/2th the FSB (so 1000mhz ram @ 500 bus (2000fsb)).

You have the extreem dark right?

Yep. And if they were still under warranty, I could take them to 2.2V without loosing it.

sadly if you had the regular xtreem you'd be way better off. alas you got the darks which are ProMOS ics.

you can go over 2.2v easy peasy :)

How high without frying them do you think is possible?

ProMOS... you'd struggle to fry them TBH but I think 2.4-2.6V is an acceptable bench voltage. 2.3V is ok daily :)

So in other words they are Pentium 4 tough.

Well it's just DDR2 tbh. you can run 2.05V on samsung DDR3, ~1.9 on most other ICs for benching. micron d9s are good for 2.8V

even ddr4 is good for 1.85v :)

BTW, since removing the 2GB sticks the CB score is going up, so I might be able to get some overclocking done today.

What kind of graphics card you running in your E8400 system?

328 at stock, up 3CB  from when I had the 2GB sticks installed.
