Block ads without AdBlocker (NOT FOR LINUS WEBSITE)

Hello,

On a lot of sites when researching things (On my school computer), I am encountering ads which is very distracting and annoying. My chromebook and account is managed by an admin, and they have blocked all chrome extensions (Including AdBlockers)

I was wondering if there is a way to unblock ads on websites without the use of a Google Chrome extension

Thanks!

that's confusing... you want to block or unblock the adds?

Try Internet Options under Privacy configure Restricted Sites

configure a loopback in HOSTS file

complain to your school teacher or network administrator

I know you can block ads on a network level, as in just for example blocking the ads.google.com (IIRC) in your router's DNS settings or something. Sometimes causes weird stuff though and that is of course only for Google Ads.

Probably gonna have to say "deal with it". :/

You can always do it the manual way with Stylish addon. Create a new style thats valid for the specific domain and add the code.

.ad_element_you_want_gone {
display:none;
}

And now I just read you cant install addons. rip me. I got nothing *flees*

If you weren't on a Chrome book I'd tell you to use the hosts file to block them, but you might be SOL here.

Ya, I'm stuck on a Chromebook and I can't and won't take the risk of installing ubuntu. I got in trouble after a school teacher said I could use Chrome Remote Desktop and then the head admin said it wasn't allowed. I'm sort of on their "Watchlist" you could say.

I'll give you some info.

  • Can't use inspect element (For some reason)
  • Blocked all chrome extensions (Except history and location trackers -__________-)
  • Chromebook is managed, so I can't sign into an account that isn't in the school domain (Example, I must sign in with a mit.edu google account)
  • Themes can't be installed
  • Cookies, cache, and other things can't be cleared without me going the chrome://  (For some reason)

Hopefully, there is something that can be done.

Thanks!

Well i'm not too familiar with chrome OS (I might give it a look in VM) but apparently there is a hosts file equivalent that you can edit.
From what i've read, it is read only.  You might be able to edit it, but you would lose automatic updates, and every time you update it would reset the file; Making you redo the edits.

I'm not certain there is an overall elegant solution to the problem, other than asking really really nicely for them to unblock extensions.

Have you tried simply explaining your situation to an admin and asking them to install an adblocker extension? I'm sure the policy is in place to prevent slacking off/infecting the computer by doing stupid stuff and if you made a reasonable request they wouldn't have a problem with it.

I have along with other things like myHomework (An online homework planner) and he hasn't added any of them. All he said is that he has heard of them

Okay, have you tried following up with him? You know the old... ask a second time? Odds are your life is not his top priority and he probably completely forgot by now.
