Are Mac computers really that bad?

Trav_X

Well, it is expensive for what it is, and upgrade path is limited.

And i hate closed eco systems. Absolutely hate it.

If you want my attention, quote meh! D: or just stick an @samcool55 in your post :3

While building a computer is easy, you have to realize the vast majority of consumers do NOT build their own computers, nor do they have any desire to, and virtually no companies will build their own systems because it's easier/cheaper in the long run to buy prebuilt systems and let the manufacturers deal with repairs. (IBM switched a bunch of their computers to OS X because it meant they didn't need nearly as many IT support members).

Except the pricing with the competition is very similar as has been shown time and time again.

I agree with you about the repairs/warranty. My former job was as a CAD tech for a heating/air con/water services design company. We used Dell for our rigs and the warranty was impeccable, any problems and they would send a service guy out within 24 hours, if it couldn't be fixed he had a replacement in his van.......That is what you are paying for I suppose. I have no experience with Apple's warranty/service contracts.

I am currently at university for Mediatechnology and Design.

I have a really good PC at home, with a GTX 980 and an i7. I mainly work on my Macbook Pro.

The reason is, that all the Software is much more stable. Sure after i finished the work i open the Project on my Home PC and render it there, but working on it?

Maya 3D is horrible on Windows, i just have crashes all over the place, where on the Mac, i have yet to experience one -  even for really complicated geometry. Logic X is by far the most userfriendly DAW out there, and is still very complex, also no crashes on Mac.

All Adobe Programms are in my experience much smoother on Mac then on Windows, and i mainly programm on the bus, the Macbook has no Problem handling this.

Sure you can argue about the Price, if 1 600€ is acceptable for this Hardware. But i have to say yes. I had countless Laptops before, none of those had the same production quality and battery -  and if i look at comparable laptops from Dell or Lenovo, they are pretty similar priced. Also the resell value is a lot higher for Macbook. I will probably buy a new Macbook in like 2 years, and the old one will still sell for a fairly decent price.

Bonus is you get something like Garageband or iFilm which is really decent for starting Music or  Filmproduction Of course you can build yourself a  PC for half the price with 10 times the power. But you can also built yourself a Bass Guitar for 500 bucks that is better than a custom shop Fender for 5000. Why do still people buy the Fender? Cause it works -  it gets the job done with no problems, stutters or disruptions. Obviously you also pay extra just to have the name Fender on your headstock (just like you pay extra for the name on a Mac).

I have yet to open a task manager in Mac, i never had to install an aditional Framework,a drive, do a complete new installation of the OS or search countless hours because fucking Photoshop CC wasn't opening (on Windows). It has just worked.

You can also argue about OS X. Is it better than Windows ? I don't think so, i enjoy Windows a lot more (draggin windows to the right or left side and have them take half of the screen is so extremly comfortable) and i can manage my Files a lot better in Windows, but the Software on it has a few too much problems for me

I have a lot to do at university, i play in a few bands and i am in a relationship, and i don't want to spend any time troubleshooting for a problem, if i can avoid it.

Also I am no Apple Fanboy. I absolutly despise the iPhone (mainly for the fact, that it can't play FLAC, i fucking hate iTunes, iOS is worse than Android L and Google Calender is much better than apples), but you have to always ask yourself why there is a specific pricetag for a product.  Two years ago I recently was in a studio with my band, and the sound engineer had a Mac Pro from 2008. At the time, i absolutly hated Apple (cause i just got my One Plus One as an Upgrade from the iPhone 5 and was really pissed on apple that i payed so much for a phone) -  and i asked him why he didn't use Windows or an up to date PC. I quote "I had this system for 6 year, i never needed to reinstall anything, i never had a crash and it is fast -  why should i upgrade".

Sure i game from time to time, and obviosuly the Mac is horrible for that, Obviously  I game on my Home PC. I love building PC's and i have done a few builds for friends back when i had time. It has its place, so does the mac. What is better for you, or what user experience is better for you, that you have to decide for yourself. But both of those systems has its place, and that is the reason why i chose both.

Its funny cause you said Ultra Oops instead of Ultra Books :D because someone who buys an apple product would say "Oops" once they really how bad of a mistake they made

Well, I tend to think content creation is the same thing as workstation? Macs are the industry standards for music and movie creation / editing.

A workstation implies a powerful machine with high end rendering capabilities OR a machine that is moderately powerful but includes professional grade hardware, such as ecc memory and quadro/firepro graphics cards. iMacs are neither and frankly they aren't qualified for serious photography either because of their lack of 10 bit colour depth. The only mac that can be considered a workstation is the mac pro, which aside from being ludicrously expensive for dubious benefits is also absolute overkill for the aforementioned photographers and not powerful enough for the continuous video rendering (LMG isn't building a server with 8 gpus for nothing) you'd expect to be able to do on a machine that costs as much as a car.

It being "industry standard" hardly matters anymore, all commonly used software is readily available for windows and there are no hardware benefits to a mac as opposed to what it was like 10 years ago.

So basically the checklist should be revised as follows:

lt. avg. Joe - yes

workstation - no

sound creation - yes

professional video and photo editing - no

low maintenance, low profile office deployment - yes

If you want to download... questionable content while remaining safe you can use a virtual machine, preferably a linux one. It probably won't be compromised and even if it does you can scratch it without consequence.

Get a case with a hot swap hard drive. Then just "whip it out" whenever someone comes snooping.

Some people will just always buy Macs xD they're a lost cause

Some people will keep on buying something because they are used to how something operates.  Either they hate change or they feel that the time having to spend on trying to adapt is more valuable to them then the money they can save.

The latter part is especially true for me, I don't like having to re-invent the wheel.  If there is something significant to be gained because there is a new wheel design that's not round and it works much better then the old design, I will consider it.  But I will not waste my time on trying to re-invent something that works.  I might be losing more money on the # number of hours trying to adapt to something than the $$$$ extra I have to spend on buying something that might be more expensive than the competition.

Agreed, I don't hate Windows I just hate the untold number of times I've had to trouble shoot problems on it.  When I was a kid and all I had to worry about was school and homework, it might not have mattered to me.  But now that I have a job and I need to be earning money to support myself, the less time I have to waste on dealing with troubleshooting issues means the more time I have for work that puts money into my bank account.

And I especially do not want to spend my weekends troubleshooting hardware or formatting drives to reinstall OS and software when I could be out taking photos, filming, traveling, scuba diving, etc.

Well a Toyota can take you from your home to anywhere you want to go in a car and they tend to be cheaper, yet people still buy Mercedes, Bentley, Jaguar, Rolls-Royce, etc.

Flying economy gets you to the same place as flying business or first class on the same flight, yet people still fly those higher more expensive classes.

No you cant say that one is good and other is bad. This is all about the user experience although mac systems are a bit less in hardware horsepower if someone wants to do full fledge windows tasks that uses all the bells and weasels of a system hardware but if the mac os x is all your business then their is hardly very little complain that you would probably have with macs.

True, the cross functionality between iOS devices and Mac's are flawless. My sister has an iPhone and MacBook Pro, and the syncing between them is extremely useful for someone like her, who is currently in her college years.
