HOLY $H!T - Long Distance Wi-fi

I doubt it is possible to get such a range without breaking the law.

'Only about $150' for 1 of the devices, judging by the NCIX link.

Also putting the bold 25km claim on the video thumbnail while testing it at 1-2% of the distance is ... eh... confident.

it's unfortunate he couldn't test this as with a good line of site this distance is a minimum. using the 300mm dishes that are rated at 20+ km we have got a link going at just over 25 km and it still has a good 20 dBm fade margin on top of it. i would guess that if you really wanted you could push these two dishes that Linus has out to a good 30-40 km under good conditions.

It's using 802.11AC, it's perfectly legal.

I cant speak for all countries but here in New Zealand with the power constraints we are restricted to under the GURL the effective link length on a 5 GHz link is about 50 km with any decent sort of throughput. @ 40 km we had a link going at about 60 Mb/s on some fairly old kit, however due to network security reasons we have moved to a licensed band and with the same power levels we are able to get over 100 Mb/s at that distance, so I'm assuming that the lower speed was just down to the crappy gear.

I'm not sure about Canada.

Could you use this between 2 locations to act as a failover for internet access?  For example your office has DSL service and your home has cable based could it be used to maintain internet connection when one of them goes down?

That would be a a cool follow up video :) as I am not good enough at networking to know how to load balance over a bridge.

Nobody said that 802.11ac is illegal.

Issue is a poll that size will normally need approval from the local air safety board. For me to put one up, I have to get it CASA approved for anything beyond 6M

60 METER pole, that's 200 ft high, good luck getting approval for that.
