I don't ever really dumpster dive but there's my neighbor Eugene who does it all the time, he's found 2 shotguns this year, it's surprising what you find.

has anyone ever dumpster divied and if yes what was the best you found

I do it for food sometimes, just because it's cheaper and modern supermarkets throw out so much food that is still perfectly fine. Also did it at larger companies mostly for oldschool tech stuff like old manuals etc that they're clearing out. It's quite entertaining to read about how it all used to work. I also salvaged a Sun Enterprise 250 server with an UltraSparc processor that I spent some time learning to program for.

Edit: Might I add I'm a student, which means money can be tight. A penny saved is a penny earned.

When I moved back to Washington State from Utah I was working in a Electronics Recycling Company and I would go into the bins all the time to snag things.

I got;

Corsair HX1000 (bad coil whine. was able to RMA)

Acer 24" LED screen

8 Sony Vaio 15.6" Windows 7 i5 machines

My brother worked as a trash pickup guy (in the big truck) and found tons and tons of misc computer parts like cases, nice WD drives, ssd's, tons of ram and even found a $6,000 or so diamond ring that his wife now has.

Why would anyone throw away a shotgun unless it was used as a murder weapon?

I did very long ago, I was about 13-15 and was looking to build my first computer. Waited till schools were throwing out their computers and moved in to see what I can get. Got a few sticks of ram (old ram), got a few cpu coolers but most importantly got some cases that I would take to my uncle to cut up holes on them so that I could see the inside. I still built a computer from scratch but I was able to determine where and what each item did.

Yea, uhh... I think I can do without eating food that's in a dumpster myself, but hey, that's just me...

I've used to do dumpster diving in a local scrapyard, but high school just takes away so much of my free time. In addition, there's a person, one year older than me, who gets the best (and also the only useful) items. I did dumpster diving for +6 months, only got some old PC tech from 1990 - 1999 that won't even work (most my home town's computers are that ancient), lots of PC power cables (240V - 250V cables, at least some of them work) and some other junk, that I've been struggling to sell.

Perhaps my best found by dumpster diving was 25 perfectly functional DVI-D cables (Most of them still were in the original packaging). I still have like 19 of them, only managed to sell one for 2 €, others I've been giving away for friends.

Now I don't dumpster dive much anymore since there's a lot of high school work on a tiny deadline, and to the only scrapyard in my hometown where I got my old junk from, people just throw broken ionizing smoke detectors in there (by broken, I mean usually opened up ones, some may have had the Ionizing chamber open for some reason).

Never trust my advice. Only take any and all advice from me with a grain of salt. Just a heads up.

My school got most of their desks from the garbage at the district office apparently.

I never done it myself, to scared. I grew up in the ghetto and you better believe homeless ppl are territorial...you want to go dumpster diving you better be ready to fight for it. I once tossed my former step son into a dumpster because we couldn't find the remote to the TV and figured it might have gotten tossed with the trash...sure enough it was in the dumpster...This was in an apartment complex dumpster, sucked to be him. The closest I have actually come is just walking around the neighborhood and seeing something on the curb such as a door...yes a perfectly good bedroom type door...carried that home  ;)

Homeless people are territorial and willing to fight for the best trash? Luckily doesn't happen here. :) There's other dangers in dumpster diving too, but that's the kind of one that'd keep me from doing it too.

If I'm gonna go dumpster diving again to the nearest scrapyard in here, I guess I'll have to carry a geiger counter... Okay maybe not, I might be over protective, but can't be too careful with alpha particles...

Also, you grew up in the ghetto? I feel sorry for you. How's the life now by the way?
