A horribly inefficient way of doing things.

Lol, being an engineer doesn't make you an end-all, be-all authority on computers. I work with a computer scientist and an electrical engineer and they are just as incompetent as any other end user at working on consumer PCs. I'm the only reason my boss knows SSDs exist, let alone that they're wonderful. I've been schooling them for months, now. Me. a pathetic 18-year-old basement dweller.

If only there were a fairy land far far away where people didn't use their titles and areas of academic study as an absolute benchmark for their level of authority on a particular subject...

Queen Elizabeth II is an army mechanic, you know?

Listen, it's cute that you're trying to help. And when you internet salesmen push your wares for gaming, I tend to stay out of the way.

You're giving bad advise. I'm not your friends. I'm devoted to this shit.

Your karma when they get a 380/x for a task it's not suited for. OP's choice to follow.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

I'm being objective.

Hairworks uses Tess - it degrades performance by about 5 fps assuming 8x is applied
Tress FX uses Direct Compute - reduces fps by 2 on Nvidia and 1 on AMD

EDIT: Default Nvidia setting is 64x which reduces fps by 20-30

Again a overclock GPU like the GTX 960 AMP 4GB is better than the R9 380 Stock?

No because almost all 380s are also factory OCed - Sapphire Nitro comes at 1100MHz vs the stock 1000

I really dont care what you say you're being. You didnt answer my perfectly reasonable question about just what was tessellation.

It's a method by which more polygons are applied to a 3D mesh so as to enhance detail and make it look better. The same can be achieved via DirectCompute while being much more efficient.

Tess  was debuted by AMD in 2004-2005-ish IIRC - somewhere there and has since then been abused by Nvidia

The problem is each is better at different tasks, so both are right, from a curtain point of view.

And because their product of choice is better at that task, then it must be better in all tasks? Right?

No, they both have strengths and weaknesses.

GTX 960 needs to be at around 1400MHz to match stock r9 380 at 970MHz. Beyond that, the 960 can only go 10% higher, while the 380 around 20-25% from stock.

OpenCL - 380
CUDA - 960
