two new EVGA video cards, the VR edition - GTX980 Ti

source: http://www.evga.com/articles/00981/evga-geforce-gtx-980-ti-vr-edition/

EVGA just launched two new video cards dubbed VR edition:

  • GeForce GTX 980 Ti VR EDITION GAMING -  Part Number: 06G-P4-3998-KR
  • GeForce GTX 980 Ti VR EDITION GAMING ACX 2.0+ - Part Number: 06G-P4-3996-KR

what makes them "VR edition", well .. this stuff:

Spoiler

06G-P4-3996-KR_XL_6.jpg

06G-P4-3996-KR_XL_1.jpg

so, they basically moved one HDMI port to the back of the card to allow a passthrough cable to a 5.25" front bay unit, unit that delivers two USB3 ports (from your mobo) and one HDMI

but the funny thing is, most of the cases today don't offer front bays anymore xD yeah ...

I would've done an external box

Plenty of people reuse their cases and a large majority of the most popular cases still offer front bays.

So far the only thing different about this that I've noticed is

  1. An HDMI connector coming out the back of the card
  2. A 5.25in bay for the VR headset

Follow the topics you create using the "Follow" button in the top right corner!

One day I will have my GTX 970. One day. PC specs are at my profile.

Not sure how to check what part works with what? Check out my compatibility guide!

The i/o on the gpu are different.

Standard has 3x dp and 1x hdmi

This has 2x dp, 1x hdmi, 1x hdmi on rear, 1x ext hdmi on the drive bay.

Interesting that they went on HDMI on the back of the card as well, instead of another DP. Guess they assumed that most people have an HDMI monitor and don't have a DP -> HDMI adapter. Which is probably what they did in hardware to get it to work.

And they should be HDMI 2.0, not 1.4a, with it being Maxwell 2.0 and everything

I think it's a good design and hope to see it on the next generation cards in greater quantity whether or not the front Bay device is included.

This is pretty cool. I think a display port would of done better for the long run, and justvinclude a DP to hdmi adapter in the box.

This confuses me so much, why wouldnt the user just get an HDMI extension for a couple bucks and not bother with the rest of this. Or just not bother because most of the headsets coming out have long cables to begin with?

The 5.25 in Bay Consortium has been planning this for a while.  Just when you thought cases didn't need front bays....

Gimmicky tbh. I'd rather have my VR headset have a mandatory x-meter long cord than this.

ROG X570-F Strix AMD R9 5900X | EK Elite 360 | EVGA 3080 FTW3 Ultra | G.Skill Trident Z Neo 64gb | Samsung 980 PRO

Like the idea if you're in the market for an upgrade and planning on getting VR but if you already have a 980 or a decent gpu I don't see the point.

Cheaper just to buy extensions for any cables you might need for VR instead of buying a brand new *VR Ready* 980 lol

I feel like we have a new "gaming edition"-like trend starting. We already have VR ready PCs and GPUs, soon we will have VR Ready peripherals! For all you Virtual Reality needs ;)

"Solus" (2015) - CPU: i7-4790k | GPU: MSI GTX 970 | Mobo: Asus Z97-A | Ram: 16GB (2x8) G.Skill Ripjaws X Series | PSU: EVGA G2 750W 80+ Gold | CaseFractal Design Define R4

Next Build: "Tyrion" (TBA)

At last, a GPU that supports VR!

well every GPU can do a VR. Just this one has a little addition to have a front HDMI Output so it's easy to connect a VR Headset instead connecting from the back.

Of course, it would be good to have Specs like this to have smooth playback with a VR https://www.oculus.com/en-us/oculus-ready-pcs/

Main Rig:
Mainboard: MSI Z270 Tomahawk Arctic | CPU: Intel Core i7 (7700k) @5GHz| RAM: Crutical Ballistix Sport LT (32GB) | GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 | Storage: SanDisk Ultra II (1TB) & Samsung 950 Pro (512GB) | PSU: Corsair RM550i | Case: Thermaltake Urban S31 (Snow)

Work Rig:
Mainboard: MSI H170A PC Mate | CPU: Intel Core i3 (6100T) @3.3GHz| RAM: Kingston HyperX 32GB | GPU: Intel HD Graphics 530 | Storage: Samsung 850 Pro (256GB) | PSU: Corsair RM650i | Case: Thermaltake Urban S31

I know that, you know that, I'd say that almost everyone that frequents these forums knows that, it was meant to make fun of the branding,  but looking back, I guess I really should have put /s on the end of my comment.

Rock On!
