Yahmaha HS5 vs Akai RPM500 Monitors

remington3

Not sure which studio monitors to get. I'm between these 2 because they both look great and I've read around that they sound good. I am using the Focusrite Scarlett Solo audio interface. I would get both off of eBay; the RPM500s for $200 and the HS5s for $280. I don't produce music or edit videos, I just really, really love listening to music. I also plan to get isolation pads.

Thank You!

Thanks! I don't think that there is a store anywhere near me where I can listen and I have heard more about the Yahmahas.

Sorry, one more thing. What cables do I buy? I'm using a Focusrite Scarlett Solo as a mentioned before.

A line-level (microphone) XLR Male to Female cable. If you want to stay safe in terms of quality, get this custom cable with Canare cabling (you can modify its length, which is currently set at 15ft): http://www.redco.com/Custom-Cable.html?cableid=4iXXVI

Canare is pretty much as good as Mogami, but cheaper.

I've heard that Monoprice cables are good, but I recall a potential problem, something to do with a short in the wiring. They're cheap and their audio quality should be sufficiently good, though: http://www.monoprice.com/category?c_id=115&cp_id=11509&cs_id=1150902

The Focusrite Scarlett Solo has 1 XLR port. This might sound really bad, but how many cables do I buy? 1 or 2? I have no idea what I am doing :)

Oh shoot, I'm sorry - I completely forgot that single-XLR port interfaces tend to use RCA.

You'll instead need either two RCA male to male cables or a single cable with two connectors at each end. The single cable option might be complicated if you're placing your RPM500s farther apart, though.

You could get two Redco custom cables with RCA connectors:

http://www.redco.com/Custom-Cable.html?cableid=vp5q8

Or you could get a single Monoprice coaxial RCA cable:

http://www.monoprice.com/category?c_id=102&cp_id=10218&cs_id=1021810

I have no experience and have not heard say about Monoprice's RCA connectors, but some of the Monoprice's reviews appear to state that some of the connectors are too tight.

There are also really cheap RCA cables with no shielding, but I don't recommend those for fear of interference or other audio quality compromises.

Looks like Monoprice cable could work.

Thanks!
