Haven't used a password in years.

EDIT: Using a password just makes the boot up time that much longer.

I use a password on mine because I don't want my mom and visitors snooping around on my computer.

Don't really have anything to hide, I just don't like people looking at my stuff without me knowing.

You better protect your stuff from the NSA then....

No, really slows down my boot to desktop times and the login screen irritates me.

None of my desktops have a password. My laptop on the other hand has many passwords just due to the fact that it stores all my personal info, my business info and access to a lot of accounts.

My computers do indeed have passwords. Not because I think it will do any good from preventing someone to get my data, but because it's a casual deterrent so that my family members dont use my computer and load shit onto it.

Password on account is to block other people using your computer.

If you want to protect your data, you need to encrypt it with Windows (Right-click on file/folder -> Properties -> General tab -> Advanced -> check Encrypt content to secure data -> OK). As soon as you do it, if it's the first time, Windows will ask you to back the certificate, so that you can decrypt it, in the case you change PC, or re-install Windows. Obviously you want to store the encryption certificate outside your system.

Encryption feature is only available in:

-> Windows 2000

-> Windows XP Professional

-> Windows Vista Business and Ultimate

-> Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate

-> Windows 8 Professional and Professional with Media Center

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA...no. If you truly value your data to the point of needing encryption to protect it, Microsoft is the last firm you'd want to trust for that. With heavy ties to the NSA and Project Prism? No thanks. I'd rather not encrypt with something that has a million backdoors. :T

My Windows 7 is pass protected mainly because I don't like anyone going through my stuff when I'm not around. It's kinda creepy when someone just goes through everything, at least to me anyway. My girlfriend knows a lot of my passes so clearly my Windows pass is to keep people I don't trust at bay. For sensitive documents and the like, stick to Truecrypt and pass phrases.

Valid point, but way over exaggerated.

Though, again, who says the NSA doesn't have their fingers in truecrypt either?

Not to mention if they wanted access to data they know is there then you'd hand over passwords for a lesser charge.

Anyway, being a linux user I have to have a password. But no I don't have anything to hide.

If one really had sensitive data to hide you would store it offsite with no paper trail back to you.

Just a bit, but it's scary what goes on behind the scenes.

On a somewhat nonrelated related note, which distro of Linux do you use? I dabbled with Mint for a little bit, but went back to Windows since audio drivers being odd.

Debian, with i3 for the window manager.
