Noob seeking expert approval

Okay, I've filled up a few carts on newegg.com. After a while I realized that what I wanted was overkill. Here's what I have now and I was wondering if it would all work together. I will get a monitor somewhere else, I have a mouse and keyboard. I will also be getting a windows 10 and Microsoft office key for around $70 combined.

 

I play Starcraft 2 at a Diamond level, but I always run all the settings on their absolute lowest. I will be downloading a Phoenix 5 pro RC simulator and spending most of my time there. Finally, I'm in college so I will be making spreadsheets, typing essays, doing research, and spending years on YouTube. I don't think I'll mess with any overclocking. I don't want to touch this computer for at least 6 years.

Any suggestions/general tips/optimization? Budget isn't really too much of a worry as long as its less than a grand including the tower and a ~$130 monitor.

Here's what I'm hoping I can put together:

 

I have a question about the 2TB HDD, what's the difference in RPM about? 7200 vs 5400.

I have a question about my Crucial RAM sticks, will they work together this way with my motherboard if I don't buy a designated '2x8' set

I have a question about inserting CDs, for CD and DVD reading I will need that Asus drive at the top of the first picture?

save 20$ and get rid of the optical drive   unless you use a lot of them.  EDIT : if it writes, it reads
as for ram, yeah don't worry. its more than fine
for the hdd. get a 2tb Seagate barracuda. cheaper and works 100% the same

for the speed of the hdd, the faster the better. (basically, the faster the disk turns the faster the drive's controler can acess the data on the disk in a second.)

The RAM will be fine. This build looks good for $800ish. The optical drive is only listed as a DVD burner, but I don't know if it reads CDs/DVDs ect. I'd change to a 7200 RPM drive rather than that 5400 RPM one.

A 7200 RPM drive is faster. Unless you need 2tb of storage I would go with a 1tb WD Blue. Another viable option is the 2tb Seagate Barracuda. Either way, the speed difference won't impact you much unless you plan on doing some serious editing.

5400 RPM vs 7200 difference is how quickly the internal platters spin. a 5400rpm drive will be slower, I would say at least grab a 7200 if you're putting your OS on it, or grab an SSD as well and only use the hdd for storage

This seems like a fine build to me,

about the RPM of the harddrive, the faster it spins, the faster data can be written and readed.

Without having to go indepth, 7200 vs 5400 is quite indicative of your speed, or read/write. So 7200 is of course faster.

 

Ram sticks, if same hz, brand etc should work fine together, so it doesn't need to come in a set if you don't need it to. As for optical drives, there is nothing really special about them. If you still use dvds, cds grab one. Internal, external, doesn't really matter, it is an old standard and that brand and exact optical drive is a common drive you can get.

Then it doesn't  But some systems in these days won't need one because you can download almost everything. It depends what you want.

I'd go for internal if your case allows it.

 

EDIT: Also, 16 GB of RAM is overkill for gaming, I'd go with 8 GB.
