Debit card fraud

Well this is a first for me. I logged into my bank account and saw that I had over $100 in charges in the last week that were not mine. I immediatly called my bank and they are canceling my card. I am getting my money back. I'm not sure how this happened, as I've never let anyone use my card and I am careful with it. I use it online sometimes but I usually use paypal. What did I do wrong? Should I file a police report? Is there a way to track WHO did it? 

 

Any advice on this would be great, as this has never happened to me.

scan your PC for malware

 

see if your PC was compromised

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

Hahahah police report. You never know some companies just have horrible protection LIKE THE US GOVERNMENT WHO LEAKED MY SSN TO THE DEEPWEB!!! I am not kidding my credit score is RIP

Using debit online is probably the least secure method as the money is immediately extracted from your bank account.

Well this is a first for me. I logged into my bank account and saw that I had over $100 in charges in the last week that were not mine. I immediatly called my bank and they are canceling my card. I am getting my money back. I'm not sure how this happened, as I've never let anyone use my card and I am careful with it. I use it online sometimes but I usually use paypal. What did I do wrong? Should I file a police report? Is there a way to track WHO did it? 

 

Any advice on this would be great, as this has never happened to me. 

I would call the card issuer and ask for the details on the transactions. (location is a big one, if the transactions where not relatively local filing a police report is unnecessary; unless your bank requires you to file one.) Also if they are anything like my bank they will be willing to talk you through some basic best practices on what to do after a card has been compromised.

If your already talking to someone in their fraud department, I would just ask them if there is anything else you should do. If your just talking to a regular customer service rep I would asked to be forwarded to the card fraud department (assuming your bank is large enough to have one)

Don't store, and better don't use debit / credit cards to make online purchases. Use PayPal. A while ago even Steam had a security breach where hackers got access to all stored payment card details on their servers. And don't use welcome or 12345678 etc as your PayPal password, try to come up with some heavily random non dictionary memorable info, for example the hardware or chip code of a piece of several computer components you can remember. And still mix in some random characters, caps and symbols.

It's very hard to say who did it but I would suggest you change all banking details just in case. Most times debit or credit card fraud is done with skimmers or inline sniffers that are attached to POS units where you punch in your pin so it's almost impossible to prevent until it's too late.

I remember this one time I kept getting phonecalls from my 'bank', trying to sell me life insurance packages. I played around with them, getting them to explain all the policies, repeat them cos my hearing is bad, sound interested, then when they asked to take all my bank details ... Lolno, goodbye.

This is why you NEVER use debit, get a credit card and you won't have to rely on being reimbursed by the bank. That's the best way to protect yourself

I'm not 18 so I don't think I can get one.

 

 

I would call the card issuer and ask for the details on the transactions. (location is a big one, if the transactions where not relatively local filing a police report is unnecessary; unless your bank requires you to file one.) Also if they are anything like my bank they will be willing to talk you through some basic best practices on what to do after a card has been compromised.

I called them they said they are doing an investigation and they told me to also make a police report. I might, probably will. Damn this is frustrating.. Like really.. Who commits fraud to buy stuff ON PLAYSTATION WTF!

Probably nothing, stuff like this can just be out of your control. In the future, maybe be a little extra cautious, but this happens and it's nothing to really beat yourself up over (especially because you didn't lose any money).

Should I file a police report?

The benefit of the police report is that you now have an official document stating what has happened. If the bank told you to get one, do it! It may be a condition of them reimbursing you.

Is there a way to track who did it?

Maybe? But you probably can't. File a police report and you've already let the bank know, so now it's out of your hands. They'll pursue the case if they want, and if they don't then they won't.

Just to clarify some info.

The RFID chips in the contactless cards generate a time sensitive one use code. It's pretty useless for someone to scan a card for this data as it would soon expire and then be useless.

Using a credit card can only help you in once sense: the bank might fight harder for their money then for yours. The only issue with this, is if the bank things your claim is bogus then they still won't do anything and you'll still have to pay for it (and interest!). Regardless, if you're a minor it's not really useful to get a credit card, wait till you're of age and then it would actually be beneficial to your credit score.

Update: I got the money back, they are doing an "investigation" not sure how it will go. At least I got the money back and the card canceled.

Happened to me about 7-8 years ago. They spent $2500+ in 24 hours, mostly at JCPenny online... Not exactly my normal shopping habits.

 

I got all my money back within a week. As far as I know no one was ever tracked down from it. 

 

I hope they find the bastard that was using yours.

One of the best things you can do it always use your debit card as a credit card. Never put in a pin number. This way you're backed by visa or whomever issued the card.
