Why do some schools block Spotify?

AlTech

So ESF (more on what it is later) blocked Spotify across all of its schools.

I happen to go an ESF school. So this is a real bummer. (Means i can only listen offline)

Why would anybody on earth block music streaming services in school?

It's so stupid ad so damn annoying.

Even spotify's website is blocked.

ESF is a company which specializes in schools and they own loads and loads of schools in Hong Kong.

Judge a product on its own merits AND the company that made it.

Because of the same reason they would block YouTube, Minecraft.net or Steam. They don't want people to be on that stuff and get distracted.

Because schools are places for learning? At least they understand that in China... Here in America, all school is, is a place to overdose on ecstasy and for students to have sex behind the lockers.

Yeah, music, sure, but you can get that online elsewhere and listen to it offline.

But I Learn better with music!

I can focus! I can conecentrate! Teachers have no problem with upper school students listening to music while doing work. Obviously i wouldn't listen to music during a presentation but i can when i'm drawing something or writing an essay.

7 MB per song, listen to 10 songs that's 70 MB, let 10 students listen to 10 songs, that's 700 MB over 30 minutes-ish

Yeah, that's what we figured. That's a fair argument, I guess, but apparently the schools just don't want all the students hogging up the bandwidth with Spotify. I mean, I know they must have a lot, because it's hong kong, but there are also presumably a lot of students... so... you can see where they're coming from.

Music is a form of art and uncensored political expression after all, which is something mainland china fears more than anything else

streaming services consume ungodly amounts of bandwidth continuously. if you have 1000 people a gigabit link, if all of them are running a 128kbit music stream, when you factor in overhead, that's 15% directly to spotify.

it may not seam like a lot, but coupled with other services it can bring a network to its knees.

Becuase the school wants its students to pay attention to the teachers? When I was in high school there was a bunch of students just sitting with their earbuds in and not paying attention to anything but Facebook.

It can also be to preserve bandwith. Sure, a single client streaming from Spotify might not be a problem, but if a 1000+ students begin streaming it will bring the network to its knees.

Also, they probably haven't blacklisted Spotify particularly. They have probably just blocked some ports on the main rounter(s) and Spotify just so happen to use those ports for its traffic.

No. All the websites blocked are personally blacklisted by the IT department at ESF. Then they roll it out to all schools.

You could try this webplayer link: https://play.spotify.com/?http=1

It should force it to use http aka port 80

Or they just block spotify.

Probably because students are using government resources for their own entertainment that is not directly linked to their learning!

If you want to listen music, download the MP3s and if your teacher is ok with you listen to your music that way

Schools do not have to provide none educational resources to students!!!
