Can anyone help me get Portal 2 working? I've tried everything...

So I'm trying to get portal 2 to run on my computer. (I did try and post in the "support" site general discussion [Link:https://steamcommunity.com/app/620/discussions/0/451848855018269080/ ]) Most of what is going on is listed in that thread.

 

Short story is the game crashes immediately when I use the shortcut and if I use the .exe it crashes at the loading screen. I have dual Xeons, 980ti and the OS (windows 10) and game are on SSDs. I've tried everything I can think of and no luck.

don't use the shortcut, or re-make the shortcut

I've done all this. when I try to do it via steam it crashes immediately.

 

Steam works and runs fine.

 

I've uninstalled and reinstalled 3 times.

I think it is that you need some files related to DirectX 9.

 

Edit: Yeah, I'm pretty sure that you are missing DirectX 9 files.

Not sure, sorry. One of the links that was in an earlier thread just directs you to the Windows 10 download page...

oh yeah, i remember doing that, installing direct x 9, that's it

I installed Direct X 9 and the problem persists...

Use the launch command "-threads 1" and see if the problem still persists. The Source engine fucking hates dual CPU setups IIRC.

Try "-dxlevel 81", "90", or "95" and see if anything changes.

Tried all three. it crashed sooner with -dxlevel 81 but was exactly the same with 90 and 95

 

I kinda had it working on a linux mint 17.3 VM but the mouse control rendered it completely unplayable...

 

currently trying to create a windows VM to try it on...

It might be something to do with VC++, try reinstalling/installing the latest Visual C++ 2008/2010/2013 etc.

Well, it runs on the VM. the mouse controls are crap but I can stream it to my regular desktop and it's fine. plays like crap without being able to use my 980ti

 

and it randomly crashed after 5 minutes of playing but it was pretty unplayable anyway...
