What fun things can I do with my day 1 Wii ?

whud99

So our family bought a Wii the same week it came out a long long time ago but resently the optical drive has started to die. It sounds like an air plane taking off when you put a disk in or when turning it on and the game will very often not be read even if the disk is scratch free. Is there anything I can do with the old thing to make it not a brick anymore without spending money on the Wii shop ?

Well, you can hit it with a hammer.

It won't fix it, but still...

You could find a way to make games work without the optical drive. You know... running backups from an SD card or sth like that. Google it.

Check into the homebrew scene. There's a LOT of 'homebrew' solutions out there for the wii that will let you play 'back up games' off an external HDD.

Well the Wii shop is down anyways.. so no use.

But you can soft mod it to run games on it still. Like emulators

May 2014 if I say it off the top of my head.

That was when Nintendo pulled the plug on all their Wii and DS servers. Can't play online on games that require those servers too (for example you can play online on most CoDs, but not WaW because that had dedicated servers.. You can't play Mario Kart Wii online normally, but you can soft mods your Wii and play on custom servers)

The CoD servers are somewhat populated in the biggest gamemodes.. but those are not custom servers.

The biggest custom server community I know of is for Mario Kart Wii, but it kinda died down over the past almost 2 years. It currently has 25 players online, one of which is actually playing: http://chadsoft.co.uk/online-status/

community servers are the best. I remember earlyer this year I played some Half life 2 deathmatch and there was still a large amount of populated servers. also it turns out I'm still good with dat crossbow !

As I said, WaW is down as it had dedicated servers (at least connected to them) but the others are not down

They didn't shut down the Wii Shop, they shut down Nintendo WFC and Wii Connect 24. You can still purchase and re-download stuff on the Wii and you can still use software that ran on its own servers like Netflix. You just can't use any of the other services or go online in the vast, vast majority of games.

Modding your Wii and using an SD or USB loader is your best option. I don't want to violate any rules of this forum so I'll just give some terms to Google to point you I. The right direction.

Modmii

Letterbomb

Wiibrew

Usbloadergx

Nintendont

You'll need an SD card, WiFi and that's it. Hopefully you can get the optical to read for long enough to dump your games onto a USB drive.

I still have my day 1 Wii... The best thing you can do is put Homebrew on it and install a bunch of emulators. I pretty much just use mine for GameCube games lol
