I want to get everybody's opinions.

Here is the question "If OSX was an open platform would you prefer it over Windows?"

I personally love the way it looks and feels but I hate the lack of costumizeability and lack of game support. That is the same way I feel about the iPhone, I've tried both and it doesn't beat an costumizeability for me.

I haven't used Mac enough to really say yes or no.

I've used it for the combined length of two days, approximately. And whilst I don't have any particular aversions to it, it would be hard for me to justify using it over Windows in my current situation.

But way do you hate it? Most people don't like it because it's a closed platform, if it were open wouldn't that improve everything?

I don't but 99.9% of users here do. Why? Because they hate Apple.

I haven't used MacOSX really at all, other than random times at school or short amount of time on other's laptops. I wouldn't switch because it doesn't have enough game support and I'm already nice and cozy using Windows.

So I don't think if it was more open I'd have any more reason to use it, linux is already open source and customisable.

Edit* I did play games on a mac at school in like grade 2, math circus ftw and kids pix don't remember them all... sammy's science house?!

If the training wheels were taken off yeah Mac would be more appealing, but that doesn't mean Mac as it stands now is horrible, just lacking in certain areas that most of LTT finds desirable such as gaming. I'd still cast my vote for Windows, simply because I'm more experienced in it but I'd be willing to give an open-sourced OS X a try. If anything it'd be used as a dual boot much as Linux is now on my machine, but it likely wouldn't be my daily driver.

I've never owned a Mac. I have used Mac at school when I was younger and some friends computers. I remember when I was a kid how I liked my parents computer (windows) more then the macs at school. I like how Windows works a bit better. Both systems are good, either works well. I just prefer Windows. I also very much like where Microsoft is heading with Windows and do not like the direction of where Apple is going with Mac and IOS.

In no way did I ask about how you felt about Apple just the os, yes there are issues with OSX but most of the performance issues would be resolved if it were an open platform that performed just as well as Windows. I'm not asking about how you feel about Macs, I think we all can agree that they suck, but if you had your current rig with OSX that worked just as well as Windows, would you like it. The only thing that would be different is the UI and pre installed software.

what about linux? Which is an open OS. I cannot, in good conscience, use windows (or osx), knowing that I am being abused by the companies behind them...

I'm always curious about statements such as this. Can you define 'abuse' for me? I don't mean to come off sarcastic, I just feel like I'm missing something and am truly curious.

Since Apple produces OS X, they tend to be used interchangeably. But I'll take your point as stated. If OS X worked just as well as Windows, including gaming and customization and modding, and the only difference is the UI and pre-installed software, then it simply becomes a beauty pageant at this point. If it were indeed open sourced, then a mod could be made to make OS X look just like Windows, much like the third party Windows software that mimics OS X. So, in essence, there wouldn't be a lick of difference under the hood.

What do you hope to gain with our opinions OP? Because Apple and Microsoft offer vastly different approaches to their OS is the very reason there are fanboys on either side. Make OS X operate 'just as good' as Windows, and you've eliminated competition. Again, it'll come down to looks which can be modded either way in this scenario. Just my thoughts, take them for a grain of salt.

In the worst case: you are being actively spied upon. All your computing gets logged and transmitted to a company which does not have your best interests at heart.

In the best case: you have absolutely no idea, or guarantee, what the software you are using is doing. You may guess, and you may try to believe what a company claims their software does, but you do not actually have any idea.

Both those scenarios are things I cannot subject myself to. They are both too eerie.
