R9 390 just cause 8GB VRAM and slightly better performance and cheaper.

R9 390. The difference isn't huge, but it's there. You also get 8GB of VRAM with the R9 390, as well as sometimes a cheaper price tag.

R9 390. The GTX 970 is only better in games that make heavy use of tesselation, and even in those games you can tweak the settings (reduce tesselation) so that the R9 390 performs better.

I'm an Nvidia fan and I haven't tried out the 390.  I'm just teed off at Nvidia and I want them to hurt and for AMD to rise.

If immersion breaking stuttering doesn't bother you, yeah it's completely playable. Or you can get a card that doesn't stutter like the 390 and get a 970.

Owned a 390, it's a great graphics card. But it's raw power verses the refined performance of the Nvidia offerings. If fps is your main priority, get a 390 and play the games where it's power is utilized. If you just want to play games, have fun, and not have to worry about compatibility get the 970.

Well my MSI 970 OC and EVGA 960 SSC was both OCed out of the box!

There is no easy answer. It depends.

 

If you have a case with great airflow then get the 390. Otherwise, you'd be better off with the 970.

If you're going to play only Just Cause 3 for the next 3 years, get a 970. Last time I checked AMD's drivers for that game are spotty, but I have no idea what the current situation is. If you're a normal person that plays more than one game, get a 390.

I would buy the 390. More vram is better especially if you plan to get another card in the future for crossfire.
