I don't want any spinning disks in my main gaming PC, so I run a 3x60GB SSD in RAID0 for the OS and games.  For my data, I have a Synology DS410 with 4x2TB Seagate Green drives in RAID5 that serves TV/radio/movies/videos/photos to the whole house via iSCSI/Window shares/NFS.  It also backs up all the PCs on the network.

1. I'll try to cut this short as possible. My storage setup is currently this: So-called-server is Raspberry Pi Model B 512MB, system is installed onto 30GB SSD and storage is 2TB usb-hdd that is shared via samba. It is not fast but it doesnt take too much power (eco my friend) and also it's really easy to manage. I dont need much speed for this and it does it job (eco + cheap). Backup system is still under work and this thread could be the answer for it! (well, then i need to buy third Pi) :-)

I'm running an OCZ-Vertex3 120GB SSD as my main drive, an external 3TB WD MyBook Essential drive for Movies, and an internal 2TB Hitachi drive for programs and other files.  The SSD was bought to improve the performance and the other drives were bought because they were on sale at the time.

What is my storage setup? Well, currently I have a;

Samsung 830 128GB for boot

2x WD Red 2TB for my critical media

Samsung F3 1TB for my random stuff + a external for backup of it

Why? Well, I need to store both my 2TB in my PC because I sold my NAS, in the thought of me = buying more drives..

but, I didn't (not yet atleast)

I must have a backup of my crucial files, I have soon 1,5TB with my media which is quite alot.. The 1TB is just a "scrap-drive",

if it fails it doesn't hurt me as much as if one of the 2TB should fail.

I am soon going emtpy of space, so I've looked for 4-6 drives for a server of mine to store my stuff on.

Winnning this would be AWESOME!

Thanks for the giveaway :)

I've got a 256GB Samsung 840 for booting and games, and a 3TB Seagate Barracuda for Fraps. I recently replaced my failed 2TB WD Green drive with a 2TB Seagate Barracuda.

I started with the green drive and then the 3TB one because they were very cheap at the time. Storage prices skyrocketed, but my green drive failed so I needed a new drive to boot from. I didn't want to skimp out on a boot drive so I opted for an SSD and a 2TB drive for storage.

i have a samsung 840 250gb ssd, which i bought to replace my old 60gb vertex 2, and the read speeds are the same as the pro, just not as fast at writing, which is not a problem for gaming (as far as i can tell)

and a 500gb seagate baracuda as a backup drive, this is the first hdd i bought when i went back to pc from laptop waaay back in 2009, only run this drive until i can find the money to get something bigger

steam and origin games are split across both drives as not enough space on either for my games library...

I currently run a 128gb ssd for the os and some main programs because it is fast and make the system feel snappier. I also have a 1tb seagate 7200.12 drive as my main drive for programs and games. Lastly I have a WD green 2tb drive for storage.

I use a crucial M4 64GB SSD and three 1TB hard drives, all local on my desktop. I use the SSD for boot and some programs, while the HDDs hold less important programs and media. I bought the SSD on a whim to try out the technology just as most of the kinks had been worked out, and was thoroughly impressed. My mass storage is local because I have a desktop anyway, and I don't need the networking of a NAS (which would be too slow on my wireless g home network anyway).

I have 5, 2TB Seagate Barracudas in a RAIDZ1 ZFS Volume in my FreeNAS Storage Server. Right now they are doing well however I do wonder about the life span of them as they are just regular consumer drives. The reason why I did this was to save money, also inside the FreeNAS console I am able to have these spin down when not in use, therefore saving energy as well as use on the drive itself. It would have been ideal to have these 24x7 rated drives in a NAS for more reliability as well as the design for multiple drives being close to one another.

So you may ask what does this do exactly?

This storage server does the "Big Data" , Music, Movies, Photos, Software, and Operating Systems. I also have it do the Windows home server backups for users around the house. Also Instant backups from my main computer as I'm programming with ownCloud. Right now I have it as one large share, coming out at 7TB of usable space, redundancy one disk. So the way I use this is with the single CIFS share, then I can mount that share to multiple VM's in my ProxmoxVE box. Right now I have 6VMs constantly running, with more in development. This picture shows I actually have a dual gigabit Intel NIC in both the ProxmoxVE hypervisor as well as the FreeNAS storage server.

post-5098-0-00626100-1378365729.jpg

FreeNAS on the left, Pfsense Firewall in the middle, ProxmoxVE on right, 24 port Dell Gigabit switch up top.

LAG interfaces are the ProxmoxVE server, FreeNAS, and my Main rig. Main rig has two Samsung 830 SSD's RAID0 and I am able to saturate the 2Gb network if all computers are talking to one another.

These WD Red drives would be a nice addition to my ProxmoxVE server, I would like to have more local storage for the VMs. I would push these drives and see what they could really take ;)

However they would be put to better use by someone who is not as experienced and could learn hands on about RAID configuration instead of just reading about it.

I currently use a 120GB Kingston HyperX 3K for my OS and a 500GB WD Black drive for storage.  I went with that SSD because it was great for the money (even better now), great performance with its synchronous NAND.  I'm not worred about the limited write cycle of NAND because I read data a lot more than I write it.  I went with the WD drive because I honestly didn't need a lot of storage when I built my system.  Now I have a growing Steam library, and storing my favorite movies I want to watch whenever I want.  I'm also switching from mp3 to flac for my music (going lossless is soooo nice) so I am rapidly running out of space on my storage drive.

Peripherals: BenQ XL2420T 1920x1080@120Hz | Filco Majestouch 2 Tenkeyless (with Cherry MX Browns) Mechanical Keyboard | Razer DeathAdder Left-handed Edition Mouse | ODAC to various things

At the moment im running 2 HDD. A 200 GB Hdd this is mainly used for OS and programs, reason is because i use to formate my OS drive at least once a year (dont anymore) and 200 GB drive is perfect for OS and programs. My second HDD is a 1 TB Seagate HDD this is my main storage drive, it was the most affordable HDD at the time of purchase.

I have a 1TB Seagate HDD and a 128GB OCZ Vertex 4 SSD. When I was building my desktop the £5 I could save on a Seagate over a WD or any other make meant I could get better quality in other areas. I added the SSD later when I had some money laying around as I am hugely impatient and wanted my PC to boot faster. I chose the Vertex 4 because its Price to Capacity was excellent for an SSD at the time and it was on a deal. Right now I am looking for an extra storage drive as I am near filling my TB atm. I would love to have a NAS or even build one myself but I cannot afford that at the moment so will just be adding a 3 or 4 TB drive into my machine in the next couple of months. Price to capacity will play a large part in this decision. If for the price of a single 4TB drive I could buy a 3TB and a 2TB then I will not get a 4TB drive as it will not make any sense.

Well if you look at my signature below, I'm running 2x Crucial M4 RAID 0 and a WD Caviar Black.

At first my desktop had a Crucial M4 while my laptop had the other Crucial M4. I wanted to test out if RAID 0 would benefit me by decreasing boot times and decreasing game loading times so I decided to transfer my laptop's Crucial M4 to my desktop. It turned out boot times actually increased because of the RAID controller while game loading times is faster by just a few insignificant seconds. As I'm a lazy dude, I'm too lazy to format my OS back to a single SSD and remove the RAID array so I just left it be. I'm not so worried that my data would be lost because there's only OS and games on my SSD. I could always download my games from Steam library again.

As for the WD 1TB Caviar Black, well I built this comp of mine back in 2011 with this Caviar Black as my main OS drive. Since Crucial M4s are so cheap last year I decided to get one for my desktop. This drive now holds random stuff and my downloads.

Thanks to LTT and WD for this awesome giveaway!

My secondary PC has a 500gb drive for XP boot and a 500gb drive for Vista boot.

My third PC that I mostly just use for audio recording and schoolwork has a 320gb drive for WinXP boot.

I also have a 1tb external hard drive used for backing up and transferring files between my PCs.

And I have some IDE drives that I don't use currently.
