AMD vs Nvidia

Why is it that the Sapphire R9 Nitro 390 8GB is only £270, whilst the nvidia gtx 970 is the same price? The 970 only has 4GB of vram whilst the r9 has 8GB. Seems abit weird to me and makes me feel as if one is overpriced or one is a poor quality card.

 

Any form of information as to why this is the case would be greatly appreciated

Well you can get a free game with an nvidia card if you see a value in that. I think it's tomb raider atm. Also so people prefer the software namely shadow play and game stream but other than that probably would just go 390. 

 

Don't get your card off amazon, look around amazon tend to be more expensive then anywhere else and they don't get the game bundles.

Performance isn't measured by VRAM size. They both offer comparable performance and the choice between them should be based on the games you play.

Can't compare a card in VRAM only, but the 390 generally performs equal if not better than the 970 in most games. Especially at resolution higher than 1080p

vram is only one thing, having 2x vram does not make the 390 2x better than the 970

i have a 390 and it never needed more than 4Gb.  When AMD refreshed the 200 series they needed to change stuff so that the 300 series wasn't just a rebrand since the 200 and 300 series both technically use the hawaii architecture.  They are both awesome cards though, and i have heard especially good things about the nitro for AMD's lineup

None is overpriced or of bad quality, they're both comparable cards, but I'd say the 390 performance is a little better overall

Generally, the 390 is the superior card out of the two. There are advantages to the 970 but those are more specific (Shadowplay if you can't use OBS for some reason, CUDA if needed and such)

Well, this forum being one giant AMD echochamber, so I know I'm going to get dogpiled for this. 

 

But mods seriously need to do something about this "390 is the better card" parroting without providing any sense of context to which scenario's or proof. This is just like everyone advising the m50X or any other doctrines.

 

The 390 is not unequivocally the better card. AMD's lackluster day-one performance in newer games for example is only one reason there is absolutely no reason to unconditionally say the 390 is the best. Both have their pro's and con's, and not all of which are going to matter in gaming scenario's. Like the 8GB vram being one of the most pointless of arguments.

 

Stop this tribalism, please. Provide something to support your claim or stop copying what the next guy said.

I know. I still maintain if those things were coded properly they would work with 0 issues - just like Tress FX
