Do you need more than 8GB for gaming?

Alir

Has the gaming scene changed recently? I've noticed RUST says that 16GB is recommended for playing. Do demanding games really need more than 8GB?

I only built my rig last year and it was pretty much accepted by everyone that 8GB was more than enough.

8GBs should be enough for gaming. Anything over 16GBs is overkill.

Exactly what dobbsjr said...

16gb for editing and 8gb is fine, 12 is the sweetspot if you can find some value ram.

Some very demanding games can call for more than 8GB nowadays but 8GB is good enough for 99% of cases.

you won't be just gaming on your PC, 8gb while enough, not necessarily end all be all, for example if you open chrome and open bunch of walkthrough and play the game on borderless window while having chrome open behind? , yes, you will need more than 8 for a smooth experience. i'd say 12 .

If you want to play Club Penguin you need more than 8GB, you need at least 128GB. But for real, not really some games say they require more RAM but they really don't. It's just nice to have some headroom to run a bunch of other programs and stuff in the background.

yeah if you have chrome in background the RAM will eat up pretty fast. tried running FO4 the other day (with mods) along with chrome and it ate up all 8gb of ram.

i'm guessing 12gb will be best here

edit: though purging google chrome helps clear some RAM.

Honestly, I don't know how people get Chrome up to such ludicrous amounts of RAM... I've never used more than 6 and those 6 were with 3 extensions and about 150 tabs open...

Currently have 2 and using 2.8 GB of RAM.

I agree, I have 2 tabs open and my entire PC is using 4.2GB of RAM, iTunes and Skype are using more than Chrome.

I actually haven't seen my PC breach 4GB of RAM in probably like at least 6 months, lol

Lucky xD I Go over 4 every single day. Running Skype, iTunes, Teamspeak, Chrome, whatevergameimplaying, and Steam at all times but I honestly don't think I've ever gone over 8. If I have I've never actually noticed it.

i'm not sure then, because over time chrome for me starts to use more and more ram. fortunately closing everything purges memory.

Try clearing all dat history and maybe getting rid of unnecessary extentions could help perhaps?

Most games ran fine for me with 8gb but Battlefield 4 didn't like having less on my PC and Wolfenstein the new order.  When I added more I stopped getting crashing in those games, and I'm, sure there are probably other games that I don't.  But for more cases you'd be fine.

just because you haven't been on more that 8 gb of ram doesn't mean everyone will have the same experience, i have 4 chrome tabs opened with 4 youtube videos pre buffered and occupying 4.8 gb of RAM, oh did i mention i just played Batman Arkham knight in borderless while it buffered a video ? the more RAM you have the more usage you'll end up using it.

In FF its 2 tabs+Steam+Avast+Libre office+HWmonitor for only 1.6GB RAM usage.

Not sure how much Avast and Libre Office use but for some reason iTunes and Skype use a lot of RAM for some god awful reason. But I have to have the open. I'd die without listening to music when I'm just browsing the internet or working on something. Also I have other misc background things like Razer Synapse, and LGS running in the background. Currently I have 10 tabs, Steam, Skype, iTunes, Photoshop, Firefox with 2 tabs, Teamspeak, and file explorer open and I'm using 4.7GB.
